Just saw it

Just saw War Witch at the Chicago Film Festival. It's an effective, and affecting, little bit of neorealism, with some magical realism thrown in for good measure (think Beasts of the Southern Wild). It's also beautifully shot: shallow depth of field and a palette of beautifully subdued earth tones make it a really delicate and often lush thing to watch. However the story itself is *very* skimpy, filled with seemingly half-related tangents and vague details (or non-details, I guess you could say). I would give specifics but I do not wish to spoil the movie. Let's just say it doesn't feel as fleshed out or as thematically resonant as it could have been.

Then again, it's telling a story that's ultimately far less concerned with message or clear intent than it is with simply conveying, without embellishment, the individual journey of a girl. Sometimes I wished there was more of that embellishment, more dimension given to a narrative that otherwise doesn't offer many surprises. But I appreciate the film for what it is, and what it does is solid, if not exactly revelatory.

Why did they change the title?

What was the original title?

Um... there was nothing magical or supernatural about it, it was just showing what she was imagining.
