In the DVD, the film maker noted that the presents were destroyed due to contamination. They also have stated that the police report that was associated with the case has been destroyed.
I did some additional research on this story. Joyce moved into the bedsit in March 2003, had the ulcer treatment in November 2003 and died in December 2003.
Her family had not heard from her by the bottom of 2002. Reports stated that she had cut herself off from her family. She also moved around frequently. This was before the wide usage of cell phones. But I am sure she could have wrote them of her new address or at least could have called them via pay phone.
Her family couldn't find her. Even when she was in the hospital, she listed the next of kin as her bank manager in November 2003.
She might have not wanted to be found because she was scared of her attacker finding her. She might not have reached out to her family because she was ashamed of her situation. She might have been so beat down by life and distrustful by this time that she wanted to be left alone. We just won't ever find out why she cut herself off from everyone.
