Canceled? Why?

I just loved this show! It's funny, it's original, entertaining, fun, actors are great... Why is it canceled? I really don't get it.
I watched many series in my life and "Don't trust" is like in my top 5. And all the actors are really great in their job, funny and even pretty to look at.
So what was the problem here?

Maybe because Chloe is like a "bad role model"? In that case wtf!!!

You can't base a sitcom's relevance on its longevity. That's like saying that whatever is on prime time is the best possible common denominator. It's just not so. It has to do with sponsors and politics and all kinds of American bs. It's Hollywood. Most of the shows on tv are total garbage. But Americans don't put up much of a fight about anything. They just take what's given to them. I don't have cable and watch most shows a year, or decade, after their relavence. I am very pleased with this method mainly because I'm not a target of any marketing in the commercials that consume so much of the viewing time. Also I can watch an entire series pretty fast.

But that's just my opinion. I've been netflixin this show lately and love it. It pokes fun at female behavior in a way that Krysten Ritter is amazing at delivering. The writing is also very honest across the board in its scrutiny of human behavior. I'm sure this has something to do with it being cancelled. Most people don't want the truth.

I saw your question and it's been festering in my head. That's my best answer. And as far as I'm concerned it's 100% correct to me. The real reason doesn't matter.

Totally agree, this show was great ^_^

Just started watching this on Netflix and I think it's hilarious -- much better than I thought it would be. I think that a lot of the failure was due to poor marketing. Yes, I knew about the show, but based on the commercials, I thought it was stupid and cheesy. I had no idea it was so good.

I have the same opinion.

I totally agree!
And I also found out about this show from netflix!
So sad that it ended.

How did this crap last 26 episodes. Same old rehash of sex jokes. Boring.

I think we watched a different show...

This show was better than every single comedy that is currently on TV.

Edit: Except for Parks and Recreation

It's absolutely criminal that this show got cancelled. It was the best new comedy in a long, long time. I just binged the whole thing on Netflix.

I was never a JVDB fan, but I'm now sold for life. He's hilarious.
I only knew Ritter from Breaking Bad, which was not a comic role. She's hilarious.
Walker... hilarious.

And I loved seeing a show with 2 female leads that was actually brilliant. Two Broke Girls can go blank itself.

Criminal, and very sad. These actors deserved a lot better.

Right behind you (Netflix!) and I'm inclined to agree.

If you want to know why the show was canceled, it was probably due to the sponsors refusing to support it any further. That can explain away anything on commercial TV being canceled, either one way or another.

It doesn't explain what happens on STARZ though. This show could have been so much more as an unfettered, straight-ahead, adult comedic effort, taken away from commercial TV, but that wasn't the case.

Obviously, the sponsors, for whatever reason, pulled-out.

JVDB playing a comedic caricature of his real-life self is reminiscent of Matt LeBlanc's character in Showtime's Episodes, however.

Starz is more notorious for canceling shows after 1 or 2 seasons than Showtime, is all I was trying to say.

Commercial TV will cancel at a the drop of a hat, if sponsorship (not to be confused with viewership) in any way fails to prevail.

This show was far too racy for network. Had it been on cable or premium like HBO, it'd be killing it in ratings.

Supposedly, there's some cult of Christian moms who strongly opposed this show and forced ABC to cancel or else they were going to get sponsors to pull out for other programs. ABC execs have said multiple times how much they loved the show and wanted to keep it around, but if their sponsors were in danger of pulling out of the network entirely, it was the wiser choice to yank from the schedule. Why the mom cult hasn't done this with 2 Broke Girls yet, I have no idea. That show deserves the ax.

Apt 23 would be served best as a summer series, Netflix, or moved to HBO/Showtime. I sort of think the show was intended as a summer program/midseason replacement since both seasons were only 13 episodes, not the usual 22-24.

As much as I hate to say it, i think the show is done for. There's still a very small possibility it might come back in several years a la Arrested Development. Krysten Ritter will be a hard sell for new and upcoming shows after being typecast as The B. I really like her and enjoy her acting, but she seems to be one of those unlucky, talented actors that never lands a successful project. Maybe after her next 5 shows get canceled, she'll come back to revive Chloe.

I sadly didn't even watch this until after it was canceled and I'm incredibly disappointed that it isn't on anymore. What a treasure. The best shows somehow always end up getting axed.

Apt. 23 was very over the top from the beginning so there was no shock value.
Nudity (fuzzed out) and complete sexual promiscuity were thrown at the audience in the beginning and for a lot of people that was offensive.
This kind of thing could work with a limited audience in a movie or on HBO but a mainstream network?
Not a chance for Apt. 23 to get good enough ratings (which dropped sharply in season 2).

A more toned down sitcom like "New Girl" shows how this kind of series can work for more mainstream audiences on network TV.

it is just in my opinion - imo - ๐ŸŒˆ

That's also my opinion. Some of us don't realize how much pull censorship groups have with networks and what we watch. It's just ridiculous that they'd go after shows like this one that really weren't that bad.

Basic networks (NBC, CBS, ABC, The WB and Fox) are rather quick to cancel scripted shows these days unless they're a hit right out of the gate. I think their expectations are a bit unrealistic given that a lot of people don't always watch a show when it airs. With the internet, DVR and Netflix, audiences know they don't have to tune in when a show airs which obviously hurts ratings. I think they should start taking those other avenues into consideration but it seems like executives would rather can a scripted show and put some reality crap on.

That's pretty much why I've given up on shows that air on basic networks. I began watching GCB which is another show that got certain groups' dander up and of course, ABC canned it. More recently, I got into Almost Human and Fox decided to cancel that too. Better to put on some dumb reality show about a group of silly women vying for the affection of a fake prince than give a scripted show a chance to grow.

Another poster made an excellent point - the American public basically does watch whatever they're given. Time and again I've read people complaining that all the fills network TV are reality and competition shows. People are obviously sick of them but the networks continue to churn them out because they're cheap. I think people need to start protesting or something but I doubt it will change much. Networks are about the bottom line and as long as there are groups of people who are entertained by the reality garbage, it will stay around forever.

Too many really good shows like this rarely last a single season. God aweful shows stay on for years.
