Inappropriate Title

I enjoyed this movie, but I can't understand the title. "The Place Beyond the Pines" sounds like either a "Little House on the Prairie" melodrama, or a slasher flick. There was nothing in the film to suggest the title. In fact, I don't think there was one single pine tree in the entire movie!

it's the native language (iroquois?) translation for schenectady. it makes perfect sense.

yes, cianfrance could have named it schenectady but then he would have lost the metaphorical meaning.

reply

Well, who would have guessed? I need to brush up on my Iroquois. But thanks, Cody, for demystifying that for me! :)

no probs.

there's another very cool schenectady reference in 'synecdoche, ny' or what it's called.

it seems the name inspires people.

reply

And very often writers and directors and producers choose poetic titles for their movies or books because the subject has a complicated theme. Like "No Country for Old Men". Poetic.

reply

Also, there is a scene where Luke rides his bike out in the country and he is at peace with pine forests all around him.

reply

nothing beats that scent.

I did know it was filmed in Schenectady but did not know that, thanks too.

Or was it Cherokee?

reply

Actually Schenectady (where the film is set and shot) is Mohawk for "beyond the pine plains".

reply

really, not one single pine tree? you must have been flapping your jaws or texting fingers or sumpin'

"I can't understand the title" ≠ Inappropriate Title

We've met before, haven't we?

reply

That is correct. I find the title inappropriate, since whatever "place" it is referring to, isn't behind any pines - or at least the film fails to identify any of it as such.
