Manic Pixie Dream Girl

The "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" female lead even had a pixie haircut. Was there any meaningful, self aware "winking" at this trope that I missed? Because this just seemed to be a pretty standard addition to the massive amounts of romcoms that utilize this trope, which, as a female I find particularly annoying and tiresome. So if they were going for "self aware" they failed in my book.

(If you don't know what the Manic Pixie Dream Girl movie trope is, it's characters like Jennifer Anniston in that Ben Stiller movie (can't remember the name but she has a pet ferret on a leash) or Natalie Portman in Garden State, etc: whimsical females who exist only to enliven the brooding male lead's life.
