WTF was this garbage?

So as I understand it 99% of the program was fake. The only real thing was the "bloop" sound recording which was played time and time again, and of course talked over time and time again.

All of what was seen was just pure theoretical nonsense consisting of bad CGI and over acting based on the said bloop recording and the beached whales.

My programming guide as well as TV Guide had this listed as a doc and not a fictional movie which is what it was. Even their own advertisements for his "special" never hinted at that this was all fiction. Bad form Animal Planet and whoever came up with this idea. Really bad form.

reply

Lancer I totally agree. I watched the ENTIRE thing, becoming increasingly pissed off that they were trying to say this actually happened; including what I agree is bad CGI (Especially the video clip of the boys finding the mermaid on the shore and it popping up.)

Also, let's not forget the horrible acting from the supposed "scientists". Anyone who's ever seen a scientist on a legit documentary knows they deliver no drama or anything when they speak. They tell the facts and anyone can tell by listening to them that they are sincere and unpretentious in their way of delivering information when they are interviewed. Then FINALLY at the end it and I do mean the VERY end of it, after the credits even, it pretty much tells you that the whole thing was made up. I wish they would have advertised it as a fictional documentary or mocumentary at some point so I wouldn't have wasted my time recording and then watching this stupendous piece of crap.

Don't be ridiculous! Jack would never die without telling me!

It is really a shame what a waste ANIMAL PLANET and Cable TV has become.. nothing but fake, garbage programming...

reply

Eh, I found it interesting. But yeah, the CGI was blatantly obvious. Reminds of a few years when there was a special about dragons, about how a group of scientists found a body. I was so pumped and made sure I was free to watch it; only to have the narrator start with, 'What if...' Still, it was a good show, if misleading.

reply

Look at the Plot Keyword, Mockumentary, what don't you understand? I think people are more pissed off that this mockumentary film actually fooled them into believing there are such things as mermaids, than the fact that the film was under produced.

Let me just point out that Animal Planet marketed and promoted this in it's commercials as a MOVIE, not as a documentary... That should be a persons first clue that this is not a factual production, but just what they called it, a movie.

reply

not all movies are fiction, and not everyone saw the commercials

reply

True, not all movies are fiction, but the case of this movie it is just that, fiction... There was even a disclaimer at the end of the credits stating the only two facts this movie was based on was The Bloop and the Naval sonar testing/mass beachings; the rest was what is known as a "Speculative Documentary" in which case a few facts are used and the rest is speculative theories and creative license. None the less, I very much enjoyed this movie, it was designed to make people think, to give them alternative possibilities and explanations which it did. So just enjoy it for what it is and don't get too wrapped up in what it looks like but isn't.

I just stumbled on this right now, the guide on my tv said River Monsters was supposed to be on. I immediately noticed it looked phony as hell, my question is why the hell is Animal Planet airing fake documentary? TLC, Discovery, and Animal Planet have fallen off like the mother.

reply

Same here flimflam, I was scrolling through my tv guide and seen River Monsters was supposed to be on, so thought I'd watch it and instead caught this show about 20 min into it.

Wasn't long before I got that creeping suspician that Animal Planet was punking us so to speak. I kept asking myself, is this real or fake, or partly fake, partly real?

I knew the obvious bad CGI were at the least reenactments, but then even the so called scientists seemed to be more like bad actors than actual scientists.

As I became more and more suspicious of this show, I actually went to AP's website and then hear looking for "real" answers and like I had come to figure, it was all BS.

Irritates me that AP has come to this kind of crap. I know many won't ever see the fine print disclaimers talked about and will leave thinking this was all real.

Sad...this was something that should have been on SYFY, not Animal planet.

reply

I think they (the producers, etc.) were trying to equal the relative success of that half-serious mock-umentary (about dragons) that was narrated by Patrick Stewart. If so, I think they failed. Because, the former hasn't even been re-run once!*

*Let alone, every six months like they seem to do with the dragon special.

I saw clips of this first on MSN. Then NOAA released a statement about it so I went ahead and watched this POS. I didn't lose any personal time since I watched it at work, but it still makes me want to buy some whale meat out of spite.

Ooo, there's whale bacon

I liked the end with the dolphins and fisherman helping each other catch fish. LOL most interesting part of this whole thing.

reply

That part was fake too! The dolphins aren't "cooperating" or "working with" the humans - they're just chasing fish into the shallows and the fishermen take advantage of what the dolphins happen to be doing. When the humans start throwing fish at the dolphins the dolphins stick around for the handout as they do in most places where humans throw fish to them.

reply

I found this very disturbing....

On the TV guide on demand it does NOT state that this is fiction. it does NOT say mockumentary. It actually said "Documentary." So, I don't care what the hell excuse you have, that is wrong and deceptive.

I started watching it thinking the program was real. I wasn't expecting quote on quote "mermaids" but I was expecting an investigation into possible evolutionary discussions like the smithsonian channel has presented exploring the depths of undiscovered territories in our oceans.

There are some pretty unbelievable creatures that are in reality (not fiction) living in our oceans; creatures that have crazy colors and strange anatomy. So I was expecting to see something that had been found that was close to a mermaid in that it might have anatomy close to a human in some parts of the creature's body.

As I started watching it I immediately became suspect because the acting was so TERRIBLE, but I didn't automatically turn away because I thought maybe they had people who were reenacting actual stories to protect the identities of scientists who might feel persecuted by the scientific community (this has actually happened before with for example those studying linguistics and were blacklisted by Noam Chomsky and his lap dogs).

I was very surprised that NOAA didn't sue these people for defamation because usually mockumentaries, parodies, or any other type of fictional film can use the abbreviations or acronyms of well-known organizations, but NOT the full title. But these clowns somehow thought that they would get away with that because they stated many times "National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration." That is also what really pissed me off. They were using an actual reputable group's name with this garbage.

Now, I might have been able to warm up to the film had it for one thing been really entertaining, or had it been on the Syfy channel (like it should have been in the first place) but the fact that they were trying to pass it off as real with no disclaimers (and they KNOW they were) on a channel that prides it self with documentaries on real earth science like Meteorology and studies of the universe and other planets etc. Then they pull out this utter garbage.....it is really insulting.

Also, to those who say "oh come on. of course it was fake! how could anyone think it was real."
Well, let's think about an 11 or 12 year old who is sitting next to you. Or maybe someone who has perceptive or neurological problems, or is mentally challenged in some way. Or maybe someone who has a regular tv compared to those large plasma screens and can't see the tiny microscopic print that was displayed after ALL the credits had rolled that finally said "this was fake." By the way, I didn't see this until articles in the news reported this story and mentioned that a pathetic excuse for a 'disclaimer' was added.

I mean, if this was april fool's day or something I might laugh, but it isn't april fools....so what the heck?

I think I am going to boycott the Discovery channel from this point on. I barely watch animal planet to begin with so there wouldn't be much point to boycotting that.

oh and let me just add this: what is the pleasure or entertainment of seeing whales bleeding out their ears? I don't find that amusing and I wouldn't want to see that unless it was a real problem that was being presented seriously to those watching. Watching animals being tortured isn't entertaining at all, at least not for those with a healthy mind. It would be like watching one of those humane society ads asking for money to help abused dogs and cats and then at the end of the ad seeing the sentence "ha, we were just kidding!" I'm surprised PETA isn't already out there yelling about this.

reply

Yeah info did not say it was fake, I figured it was a bs thing like they do on the Big Foot and such...but at least some of those have some real (faked) footage and people you can laugh at, this one was just all fake. Now I know I can't trust this channel at all, very poor taste. It was like listening to teh republican convention a second day in a row. :(

reply

Thank You, estella2!!! Well said...you perfectly encapsulated exactly what I was thinking :-) Bravo....

This "show" was MASSIVELY INSULTING!

Edit:

Just wanted to add, after reading estella2's post (and others that I/We agree with), a more personal message to IMDB:

ADD A LIKE/DISLIKE OPTION FOR RATING OTHER USERS' POSTS!!! Lol...just saying.

Yes, I say "ditto" to estella2's response to "Mermaids."

reply

Well put, but the fact still remains that you didn't do your homework on the special beforehand, so if you allowed someone with the deficiencies you mentioned watch it, that's on you.

Spot on LancerOh9. This documentary or film or whatever you want to call it, has to be the biggest pile of doggy do-do that I've ever had the misfortune to watch. How the hell I managed to sit through this garbage is beyond me. Mind you, it did give me quite a laugh throughout though, with the bad acting, bad CGI, and at times I was laughing out loud at how pathetic the whole saga was. Suffice to say, I won't be watching Animal Planet anytime soon, or in the near future. Garbage beyond belief.

I saw a mermaid once. It had red hair and associated with a bad stereotype Jamaican crab that wouldn't stop singing.

Just came across this and the other film, Mermaids: New Evidence, and immediately knew it was a fake. There's just a difference between actors spouting scripted lines and a real interview. You can almost always tell. And the "evidence" is so laughably fake I doubt it would fool a child.

I don't have anything against the producers making it and trying to pull a fast one; ala The Fourth Kind, Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity, Etc., but Animal Planet and Discovery... What are you thinking!? This drek should be relegated to late-night viewings on Sci-Fi and Chiller.
