it might be too early to ask this question, but should i see the original that is in french or the english dubbed one that comes out on feb 28 in the US?
shareI watched the original version and was really happy with it. First, because French is a wonderful language to hear, and second, the cast of this movie did a good job of doing the voices. I'd recommend the French version as well as the English one :)
shareI recommend the French one, for the cast in it is wonderful and sounds more cute, simple and honest(<=how to express????...In other words, the feeling is more like you are listening to a bear). But English version sounds too deep.
shareNo question you should see the version in its original French. ALWAYS, whenever possible, view a film in its original language - as intended; the vast majority of the time, you come so much closer to capturing the original tone, dialogue, meaning, and heart of the film with subtitles than you EVER would with dubbing.
shareAnimation is different though. Since it's not real people the lip syncing usually doesn't look nearly as bad and not having to read makes it easier to focus on the actual art. Miyazaki himself said he would rather Americans watch his films in English so they can pay more attention to the visuals they worked so hard on.

shareI didn't realise there was an American dub - watched the DVD last night and it's quite possible that track isn't available. Loved the original French cast though so, yeah, go for that if you've no problem with reading subtitles and keeping up with the animation (the pace isn't too fast).
shareEnglish dub is available and the film is circulating in theaters now. Just saw it tonight in Wash DC. The Landmark Cinemas are showing both versions - French and English dub. Wonderful!
shareNot to sound like a Philistine, but I'd recommend the English dub. This movie is so beautiful you want to spend as much time as you can admiring the frame, rather than reading the text.
shareJust saw the English dub at the WilmFilm (Wilmington DE) festival and I loved it. The American cast created a rich emotive atmosphere that was fun. This one is also highly recommended to bring kids along to see, where dubbing is essential.
shareIn the DVD I just got, both versions coexist, and I saw them both. I liked both, and there's little to choose between them really. The English subtitles are the same for both, and being a reasonably close translation of the French, are a poor match to the English version, so you might find that distracting if you're in the habit of leaving them on.
shareJust watched this in French and you know, and this is very rare, you could actually follow the film without reading the subtitles as sometimes I was just concentrating on the animation and "knew" what was going on and for the most part said
It would be interesting to hear the English dub as it's Lauren Bacall's last film
