I'm not even dissing on the movie, but Smith was box office platinum & M.Night has been box office poison, both critically & financially. What version of the collaboration did he imagine would be sussessful?

I think Will Smith wanted him because M. Night was down and was most likely Malleable towards Smith and his kid.
"There's a big difference between winging it and seeing what happens. Now let's see what happens".
From my understanding Will is a fan of Shyamalan's, or at least one of his films, and had wanted to work with him for years. I have no idea why Will decided to take this pitch to him, considering Shyamalan's career has been plummeting. Did Will not notice, or did he hope this could reignite both their careers?
