couple of annoying glitches

I've encountered a couple of annoying glitches that I can't find a solution for online - just wondering if anyone has encountered these and has suggestions.

1. Totems of Hircine - Aela disappears (forever!).
I was doing the first Totems of Hircine quest with Aela the huntress. Fast-travelled to a nearby area, then went down a steep hill to the cave. Usually the follower takes the main path and catches up later, but Aela never did. I got the totem, but the game won't let me do anything with it till I speak to Aela. I've read that she usually returns to Jorrvaskr sometime later, or you can try waiting for 24 hours outside. I've tried waiting 24hrs, I've tried letting several days go by, but still no sign of her. Weeks have gone by within the game and she's nowhere to be found. Is it possible she's actually dead? If you get separated from a follower, can they die while you're not around?

2. Purify - curing my lycanthropy not working.
Finished the Companions main quests, then did purify with Farkas, or whatever his name is. I had 4 Glenmoril witches heads. Went to the shrine, activated the sacred flame, killed his wolf spirit, finished the quest. I then tried to activate the flame again to cure myself, but it didn't work. Checked my inventory, and found that I still had all four heads, so although it had purified Farkas, it hadn't used up the head like it's supposed to. I tried replaying it a few times, same thing happened every time. Gave up after a while, and went off to do other things. I've returned to the shrine from time to time at random intervals, but can never get the sacred flame to work.
Anyone know of a fix for this, or is there another way of curing werewolves?

If you're on the PC you can use the console to teleport yourself to Aela (if she's still alive - is she marked as essential by this stage? Could you have accidentally got her killed?)

With the second one I think you need to trigger the quest to cure yourself, probably by talking with someone in Jorrvaskr. The best bet is to check the wikis.

Thanks. Felt a bit like cheating, but I transported myself to Aela.
Turns out she was still alive, on the very top of a mountain. Don't know how she got up there, but she was apparently stuck there permanently, as she must have been there for several weeks within the game.

I don't regard it as cheating to get around the game doing odd nonsensical things. Similarly I'll sometimes use the console to get a quest out of my journal that I've no intention of doing (most playthroughs I've no intention of becoming criminal scum or murdering people just because some daedric *beep* wants me to).

There is a bug that results in the player having to cure both Farkas and Vilkas of their lycanthropy before he can cure his own.

According to one of the wikis the console command player.removespell 00092C48 will also effect a cure. I don't think using the console to fix a bug is cheating.
