Question to experienced Skyrim players!

Okay, I've got a question to all you experienced Skyrim players out there.

But first off, I'd like to make something perfectly clear: I ABSOLUTELY HATE ALL SORTS OF CHEATING IN ALL GAMES. And I always have.

In a hypothetical situation, if God came to me and said: "I give you the opportunity to remove all forms of cheating, in all games that exist, ever." I would say yes without hesitating for a second :P

With that being said I think it's perfectly clear that I would never use any goddamn console commands in my Skyrim experience! I wish there wasn't a console at all actually. I don't use any mods either, even if there are a lot of mods out there I know people wouldn't consider as "cheats".

In other words: I just want the purest Skyrim experience I can get! And that means no cheats, no mods and NO CONSOLE COMMANDS. I want to accomplish EVERYTHING on my own and by my own mind and skill. That's mostly why I hate cheats in games so much. I NEVER look things up on the internet either, even if I'm stuck.

However, since the "console key" is located just above TAB, it has happened a couple of times that I have hit it accidentally, when I was actually going for TAB (which I obviously use a lot in the game). When that happens I hit the key quickly again to make it go away (it even gives me a bit of anxiety just to accidentally bring it up, like that would be enough to make me a cheater or something, haha.. I know, I'm a bit crazy!)

And if you haven't used any console commands "the command text box" is clear, there is nothing written in it. BUT ONE TIME when I accidentally hit it, there were one line of text in it!! Like I had written something there.. I got really annoyed. I have NEVER, EVER used the console or written anything in it!!

So this makes me a bit worried now :P Does anyone know why there were text in the console, even though I have never typed anything in there? Because I don't get it.. Maybe this has happened to you as well?

I would appreciate your answer. Thanks in advance! :)

Also, I realize this is a weird place to ask this question! And yes, I'm a bit of an extremist when it comes to things like this :P

I wouldn't get too worked up about it. It's massively unlikely you would've done anything accidentally. Perhaps you clicked on an object although IIRC that doesn't copy it into the console. I've never tried but can the key for it be remapped to somewhere less likely to be accidentally hit?

Best just to not worry and to not regard the console as a cheat (it can be entirely legitimately used to get around bugs and glitches IMO).

I have had items "in the crosshairs" pop up an id number when I hit the tilde. Well, not items... it was a dead shopkeeper I was looting. I hit tilde and the console commend popped with his id up. For the OP, it was just the id, closing it down did not alter him at all. More command has to be input to do that.

I'm kind of like the op about cheats and mods. But only on my first (what I call) official run-through. For repeat plays I don't care as much.

Mods are not cheats you know? they are immersive add-ons, if you want to "enjoy the purest Skyrim experience" well...you are really missing a lot of immersive things like FrostFall mod, which makes your character die from hypothermia if you don't camp and set a fire... Anyway, about the lines on console, i've seen what you mean, and those are not objects targeted, sometimes you can see the script lines of a recent quest you just finished or some some triggers that activates something in game, so don't worry about it.

That does sound cool. I will have to look into mods. I'm an older guy and don't know much about modding games so I'll have to do some reading and find out how to get them into the game.

Hi, old Elder Scrolls fan here. After playing Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim for years now I can only advise you to keep an open mind when dealing with Elder Scrolls world :) That helps a lot.

Sure, I agree with you about console, cheating etc. - it's not fun going through a game with god mode on. But sometimes console commands really help if e.g. you're stuck in a game cell - or sth from your inventory gets lost in the game due to a game bug or a thing in-game that you can do nothing about. So it's not that black and white sometimes.

And as for mods: I'd go to a place like nexusmods and check a list like this http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/topalltime/?adult=2 - see for yourself. Lots of useful mods out there. In fact, what makes the Elder Scrolls world so great to me is the chance to change and expand your favourite game world yourself. Since we're on a film database site - I'd compare this to being a film director: you are not just a spectator of someone else's vision. You can create and modify your own experience, be director, designer and actor all in one. Which is amazing, I'd say.

Good luck...and may you always walk on warm sands ;]

The only times I saw commands on the console that I did not input was with Fallout: New Vegas. And that was because of a mod I had to download to help keep the game from constantly crashing. Haven't had the need (knock on wood) to get a similar mod for Skyrim.

It's impossible to cheat in a one player game as there's no competition. It's all whatever you think is fun to do.

reply

That doesn't mean that it's not cheating, it just means there's no-one to get bothered by it.

reply

Yes it does. Cheating can only happen when you're playing someone else and using an advantage they don't have.

reply

That'll be why computer magazines used to publish cheats for games, long before multiplayer (beyond the occasional split screen) existed. If you're not playing by the rules of the game then you're cheating, whether someone else is involved or not. It just doesn't matter if no-one else is involved.

Yup, the iconic Konami code is a cheat code. It is a cheat, one of the most famous ones ever in videogames. And it happens in Contra, where there is no versus multiplayer (only co-op) and if the code is input both players get the extra lives. But that doesn't make it any less a cheat.
