Special Edition, Worth it or not?

For me it was worth it. Mostly because I play on PC and it was free. Every one of the improvements made were already available to me in mods, and its likely true I'd have never paid for the SE if it weren't free. Plus none of the improvements were really things I cared about anyway. I didn't need the brightening of the color palette. I thought the lighting was good enough without the ambient occlusion. The weather occlusion is nice, but it wasn't a game breaker before the SE. And the water really flows better, but I didn't have a problem with the water effects in the original release. It does run better and allows for more memory use, that's about the only practical difference.

But for console players... it's going to represent a huge upgrade from the XBOX 360 or PS3 versions.

The most obvious look changes were things I'd got mods in for anyway, but the performance is a bit better (and being 64 bit should help). I appreciate the less blocky shadows. Any idea if the underlying changes will make decent distant lighting possible? By that I mostly mean mountains casting shadows, distant views look a bit plain at present because of the lack of that, and I don't think it was doable with any mods in the original version.

As it stands I doubt I'd have paid for it either, although if it opens up the scope for mods that weren't possible before we'll see.

I'd hoped for some character model improvements, but there's plenty of them out there (although my cursory searches didn't find any quite to my taste).

I paid for it for XBox One and I'd say it's worth it!

Question then, did you own the original version on any platform? I was just curious how many folks would pay money a second time.

I probably would if it was a game like Skyrim. I own 3 different versions of Metal Gear Solid and two different versions of Final Fantasy 6, 7, and 8 after all.

I did, and all of the DLC when it became available.

I'm still enjoying it, basically since I played it when it first came out (I stood in line to get my pre-ordered copy) five years ago and so I don't remember a lot of the main quest/initial side quests so it seems "new" to me!

That and I got the dreaded Red Ring of Death on my 360 a little over a year ago so I couldn't replay it...

Yeah I had Skyrim on PS3 and the Hearthfire but that was it. Put probably about 2 or 3 hundred hours in. Never bought the other DLCs because they were 20$ a piece.

Buying it again was worth it for me in that case because that 40$ of DLC I didn't play was a part of the main price so it was really only 30$ for the remastered version and I have to say so far- definitely worth it.

About 20 hours+ in and so far no glitches or bugs at all and its gorgeous! So yeah- I'd say worth it.

I stick by the rule of if 1$=at least one hour of play time then it's worth it. So Skyrim would probably always be worth it lol.

I never played it before, so for me it was worth it on the PS4.

I think it's mostly aimed for the consoles especially the Xbox One to get it running on the new systems and get the mods. The PS4 versions kind of lame because of Sony's greed in blocking many of the mods but that's what we've come to expect from Sony.

to me it was worth it for the shorter loading screens alone. Going through a door only takes a second now

That was my roommate's biggest issue with it on PS3. And another reason the SE was free on PC, a good pc had loading times about 1 - 2 seconds already.
