Why did the dad have to go to jail?

Is it because he 'killed' his wife by turning off her machine? I wonder

I liked the ending, I was just sad that he had to go to jail and the little girl had to endure an even longer time without her father.

I liked that long scene where he was crying over having to turn off the machine, I could think he thought that he wished it was the other way around. He had given all hope for her and the mother continued to search for so many years. The mother is the person who deserves more to see the child again, not so much the father. Then the end when the little girl asks if he had ever given up hope in finding her. It's another reminder that he should have been the one who should have been in the hospital bed and the mother turning off the machine. It is something that he has to endure the rest of his life.

Can you see the "spoiler" button on the format bar when you compose a message? Please use it. He murdered his wife. Likely, he murdered the psychopath. Some day, he can only hope the daughter will understand his motive for the former. I disagree with his decision, but I've never had to face a seemingly impossible choice of that depth. Also, we are given no information regarding the mother's prognosis.

It's up to the court to rule homicide or lesser on the latter, though self defense/under duress would seem pretty iron-clad.

Insofar as one's conscience is concerned, it comes down to whether or not the ends justify the means. Courts don't work the same way, as they are mandated to apply law, though precedent has been known to bend laws to circus-like extremes. 😉
