Fat Theme / Foreclosure / Weak Husband = Current American Symbolism?

Please forgive the typos ..

Fat Theme / Foreclosure = Greed / Wall Street?

Macaroni = All American, apple pie, baseball .. U.S. propaganda, heaping bowl fulls .. we got fat and content from eating it up, until others wanted some.

Husband Luke Wilson = American male emasculated via Wife, Job, Economy? Gullible. Fall of the once imagined All American Male. The American Dream.

Wife. At one point of the movie joined Jackson in beating Wilson. Has adopted children, (see current social memes) Cold, selfish and calculating.

Family Kids (possibly Latin) = Immigration reform, non-speaking residents? Gardner's offspring?

Samuel Jackson = paranoia of black men, maybe age of black president? Whistling Dixie / while "impersonating" a police officer =(demographic refusing to accept legitimacy of 2008 elections) .. finally taken down (single & only shot) by a black female (legitimate)police officer, while other white male officers watched. Impotency? Remember the last line of dialogue? She (female officer)said to the white detective as he lit a cigarette. "smoking kills sperm cells" this line coming from the only officer to discharge her weapon on Jackson. In a circle (circle jerk motif) of onlooking trigger shy white male officers.

Theme, the threat of emasculation, impotency and downfall of white american male via minorities, women, illness or greed.

The house intrusion and destruction of the traditional American family nucleus = being force feed big bowls of (macaroni) politically correct, social memes? There's a lot more, but I'm curious as to any of you guys, might see the analogies?

Okay, let me know what you think?

I think the movie was terrible and you are reading for too much into it. The movie was about a subtle as an elephant, any "hidden messages" are you being far too hopeful.

reply

Your comment started with "I think ... and ended with hopeful. You're obviously not sure of your thoughts regarding the movie. Maybe viewing the impotency of the main character made you feel uncomfortable? Then, the movie accomplished its goal. It was a dog-whistle plot or social paradigm. Think about the premise/plot regarding the intruder. His race, his demeanor and the havoc he accomplished. While smiling. Now think of the title of the movie.

Don't be naive. Nearly every movie script has hidden messages or images, (from Disney to Fox) deliberate or subconscious these machinations comes from a thought process. People. I'm sure you're full of "hidden messages" some you're not totally aware of? Gestures, nuances and behavior that doesn't always make sense?

So, imagine a movie with static imagery, nuances that doesn't necessarily connect with purpose or intent to its audience. Terrible movie to you. Clever to others. No harm, no foul. It wasn't written for you.

Ta, for now.

No, the hopeful but was implying that you were being delusional about this movie. It was garbage. Luke Wilson is terrible, it's poorly directed, everything about it is so obvious it's obnoxious. "How can we show how broke he is? How about a best up can and we make a huge effort to show you the doughnut tire, and then when he gets to his house there's 10 envelopes all stamped Final Notice, or and am eviction notice on his door, that somehow his wife hadn't seen?" And it's the least believable character I've ever seen, who would still be that nice to a random stranger?! And the fact that a girl 15 years younger and FAR MORE attractive than he is is supposed to be attracted to him, ridiculous.
If you actually thought this was a good movie with compeling characters then you my friend, are a moron.

And put away your thesaurus, this is an Internet message board, no need to try so hard.

reply

You know, after reading the exchange between us you seem very aggressive. Name calling? ??? And I thought we were having a discussion about a film.

Obviously and quite unintentionally I got under your skin. Trust me, opinions always differ. Still, never be the first to resort to name calling during any discussion, especially on a internet message board.

You'll come off as a bit self-loathing. (awkward silence)

Now read my first post about the movie .. and then read your response. Hard to miss the irony, given the title of the movie and your anger.

Oh .. okay, I'll say it. Ta, for now.

reply

The only thing in my post about you was calling you a moron, so I don't know what you're talking about. I'm going to guess you're a millennial who thinks everything is about them. Or you're not, who cares either way this is just a stupid Internet message board after all.

reply

And, how are you getting along with the "stupid internet message board? "
Are you making any new friends? Have there been any recent outbursts or triggers?

Millennial. Catchy. I like it.

Ta.

Wow!!! You are way smarter than me!! I never in a million years ever thought about all your symbolism! My head is now full with your thoughts! I must be stupid because I'm very confused now. I'm a simple girl & I like to just enjoy a movie. I will confess that my first thought was that Samuel was Lukes alter ego. 😀 👌
