Why do liberals attack Christians but defend Muslims?

Why libs?

They know better.

Hey now, I'm a liberal and I don't defend ANY religion... they're all dumb.

reply

Ben, I'm a Christian, but you're now my favorite poster of the week.

know better what? If a Muslim is bigoted here, they will be dealt with, but so far its only egotistical christians that are pushing their nonsense in our faces!!

I'm with bensfiction here.

But, listen, the idea that liberals attack Christians but defend Muslims is an extremely distorted and simplistic way to look at current liberal attitudes. It's something those on the right accept as a truth because it falls in with the conservative worldview.

There are, indeed, some in the liberal movement that are doing it solely in an elitist and overly political correct way. And, in those cases, it's not distorted. You're right, because it's a weird thing to do.

But, really, what you have here is this-

Muslim fanatics are warping the religion and using it for evil purposes. Too many people (especially Americans) are holding all Muslims responsible for this. So we recognize them as being persecuted against and stereotyped. When peaceful Muslims try to make the point that the views of the fundamentalists don't represent their viewpoints, their voices go unheard. So what you see is those on the left stepping up for the minority and helping give them a voice. They're not endorsing Islam. They're just endorsing it as a legitimate religion as much as any religion. Liberals don't want to convert anyone.

In regards to Christians, it's because they've been the majority in our country since it was founded (unless I'm talking out of my butt). It's done many good things, but it, like, Islam is too frequently distorted to promote intolerance. For many on the left, the views held by American Christians (not Christianity itself) represents a step back, instead of a step forward. It's much more institutionalized, and so, as we try to move forward, it's inevitable that we'll come to odds with the institutions we're trying to change.

Listen, would America elect an openly Muslim president? No. Would America elect an openly Jewish president? No. Would America elect an openly atheist president? Absolutely not. Those running for office absolutely have to identify as a Christian, regardless of the veracity.

Liberals have no problem attacking a Muslim when it's called for. Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam), for example. Even Jon Stewart admitted it was a mistake to have him perform at his rally.

Just as conservatives and libertarians want Big Government out of their personal lives, most Liberals want religion out of their personal lives (and the most relevant religion here is Christianity).

It's gotten to the point where Conservatism and Christianity are so intertwined that it's hard to tell them apart anymore. Separation of church and state has gotten lost. You don't want gay marriage shoved down your throats- we don't want Christianity shoved down our throats. We'll tolerate it to the extent we can, but not when it goes against our own values. The attacks on Christians you see by Liberals is entirely homegrown. It's American Christians we too often butt heads with, and that's for a reason.

In addition, those who are atheists or agnostics have a completely different mindset than those who are religious. Frankly, we find it baffling and hilarious that Christians actually believe the things they do. And why shouldn't we? I know this cliche is so 90's, but if we believed in the Flying Spaghetti Monster, you would feel the same way. That's just something you have to accept. It's not our fault we find it so puzzling and worthy of mockery. It just is (for us).

Lastly, according to Christianity, the only way to heaven is to accept Jesus as your personal savior. That means all Christians think Jews, Muslims, Atheists, Agnostics, every other religion is going to hell. That's a worldview most of us can't get behind. Other theistic religions believe in a God (often the same God), but they don't need Jesus to get to heaven. So, really, Christianity is kind of the most exclusive religion out there (again, I could be talking out of my butt).

Liberals (and atheists) are just as heartbroken at the current persecution of Christians in the Middle East.

The point is, we just want Christianity out of our faces, and we would prefer our nation didn't rely on an ancient book for its moral compass. We call out anything that we find hateful, discriminatory, or what we see as a step in the wrong direction, and if it happens to be Christianity, then it's Christianity. We don't set out trying to attack Christianity.

Also, for your inevitable argument that we keep mum about atrocities committed toward women and homosexuals in Islamic countries- I guess it's sort of hypocrisy, but at the same time- what are we supposed to do about it? We can offer refuge to those who wish to escape, but that's about it. We don't necessarily think that America is the greatest country ever and that we should impose our values on other countries. We offer aid, but what do you propose we do? The oppressors in Islamic countries probably feel the same way about our implementation of Christianity.

So, really, it's a warped viewpoint of a more nuanced behavior that doesn't even apply to all "liberals."

Edit: I should add that I'm just a dude sitting at a keyboard typing out his own beliefs and observations. I'm sure there are many holes in what I said, and I guarantee not every liberal who reads this will agree with me 100%. We tend to think for ourselves. I'm not speaking on behalf of anyone- again, I'm just a guy who decided to jump in with his own observations.

At least christians aren't beheading ppl. Gays are being killed for being gay in islamic countries, I never see outrage over that. For radical islamists it's "convert or die" to me that's worse.

Y'know, I could eat a peach for hours

Yes you DO see the outrage over that, you choose to ignore it.

As for gays being killed ... why not address the Army of God, Eric Rudolph, David Copeland

Christianity is approximately 2000 years old. Islam is approximately 1400 years old. 15th Century Christians made a habit of killing not only non-Christians but Christians of different sorts (Catholic/Protestant -- cf. Sunni/Shia) I don't want to make too much of a point of this since in those days - and for several centuries before - Muslims were far more civilized and tolerant than were contemporary Christians. So if you want to say that Muslims - or at least many of them - have moved in a retrograde direction while Christians - or at least many of them - have gained in rationality and tolerance, then I could not disagree.

many Christians kill people -ever heard of Africa? The Christians there are slaughtering thousands! In the US, most mass shooters are wacky religious freaks.

Catholics do not believe that. I believe some Mainline Protestants as well do not have a "believe in Jesus or go to hell" view.

You know, I don't find this stuff amusing anymore...

reply

Just throwing into the mix that these "Muslim fanatics" you mention are not twisting their faith - they're following it to the letter. Reformed Muslims are great, but they're not accurately following their religion. Islam as a religion literally says to KILL anyone who doesn't agree with your beliefs as laid out in the Quran

not true at all

I'm a lib and I prefer Christians. There is too much abuse of women and violence and a great deal of brainwashing in Islam. They believe every word of the Koran. Some Christians believe every word of the Bible, but the Bible is a much better book. I only mind Christians if they try to influence govt with religious laws. We are a secular state. You can practice your religion any way you want. If we don't protect separation of church and state, it could be Muslims instead of Christians who take us over someday.

reply

Turn off Fox...liberals no more defend Muslims than they do any other religion. The problem is the fact Christians claim that they are being shunned is laughable. Most could care either way but reflexively we are turned off by the victum mentality. Go practice your faith..more power to you..

reply

Turn off whoever tells you that Fox is a conservative network. The moment somebody says "turn off Fox," they instantly lose any credibility with me. (And I don't even watch Fox.)

most liberals are Christian, you dope! Muslims in the USA aren't bigoted-theyre just normal people. Christians insist on pushing their religious nonsense into govt and every day life. That don't fly here
