Some of the encounters have to be staged, like when the paint drinker goes in to get new markers and tastes them in front of the store clerk--she already has her supplies and knows the brand she likes, she wouldn't need to ask for assistance and likely wouldn't blatantly test them in front of people like that.

They always add an extra little public encounter like that. If these people were really trying to hide their addictions, they wouldn't be bringing strangers into by conspicuously engaging in it in public.
