Totally miscast

Logan Marshall-Green playing the teenage Jewel? Really?

reply

I agree. The actors don't look like famished appalachian rednecks. They look like over payed Hollywood elites. I like how they the actors make funny faces with their mouths to make themselves look more rustic.

You can't be much of a Faulkner fan if you thought Yoknapatawpha County, where the book takes place, is in Appalachia. Do a little research. Yoknapatawpha County is in Mississippi. In fact, it is Faulkner's fictional name for Lafayette County, Mississippi, where he actually lived.

But, in reality, the novel, IS set in Appalachia. I think it is you, that needs to do a little research.

reply

The novel is set in Mississipi--NOT Appalachia. Why do you insist it is in Appalachia?

reply

Parts of Mississippi are considered Appalachia. Why do you insist it Is not? Do a little research. Research Appalachian Authors, dollars to donuts Faulkner shows up.

reply

You owe us a doughnut. Faulkner's name doesn't appear on any list of Appalachian authors I can find. Bits of Mississippi are considered part of Appalachia but they're far to the northeast of Faulkner's part of the state.

As a native southerner, a pet peeve of mine is the total inability of Hollywood to come anywhere near an accurate southern accent. This film does not improve the record.

Moreover, I think there may be some confusion between a geological definition of Appalachia, and the region commonly defined as Appalachia. While some parts of Mississippi may be part of the geological formation of Appalacia, commonly only the mountainous region is called that. I assure both of you that no Mississippi native considers him/herself an Appalachian.

reply

I disagree in regards to the actors' appearances. I thought they all looked very "downhome." Poor, yes, but each well- or not-so-well groomed according to his or her own abilities or self-regard.

I consider myself a serious Faulkner fan (but by no means an expert). I was worried that this would be a Hollywood catastrophe from the moment I read about the undertaking. Having just seen it, my fears were allayed and I can only say, "well done, gang! Please do more!"

True, more of them should have looked like Blake. Dewey Dell looked like a cover girl.

reply

I pictured Jewel to be in his twenties.

Old sport.

reply

It's been a while since I read the book, but I do remember they explicitly state Jewel's age, and he was still in his teens. I want to say 19, but it may have been younger.

reply

Jewel is more in his mid-20s in the book. His older brothers are around early 30s. Dewey Dell is about 16/17. The youngest boy is about 10- 12.

reply

Just read the book.

Dewey Dell is seventeen (it specifically says so).
Cash and Darl are the oldest and very close in age, and in one conversation (and also Addie's monologue) it's made clear that there's a large gap, about 10 years, between Darl and Jewel (whom Darl groups with Dewey Dell in age, so it's probably close), so in my mind that puts them at about:
Cash - 30
Darl - 28 or 29
Jewel - 19
Dewey Dell - 17

That just leaves Vardaman. The only thing we know for sure is that he's younger than Dewey Dell. I've heard guesses ranging from 5 to 10. Given the degree to which everyone else just ignores him most of the time, and his erratic thinking and behaviour, my personal feeling is 5-7.

reply

I could be totally wrong, but the last time I read the book, I remembered it saying somewhere (indirectly) that Vardaman was 7. I think I got this from the scene where he shows up on someone's doorstep in the rain..

reply

Ok, so Logan Marshall-Green is lovely, but why couldn't she have been born in redneck country? Being poor doesn't mean you can't have good bone structure. And these people were farmers, they didn't go hungry.

reply

Exactly. What's scary is that we're surrounded by ppl who are downright morons and THEY critique ppl from Appalachia? Suggesting they shouldn't be attractive; that their genetic code is set that they need to be ugly? smh...

reply
