I don't get it **SPOILERS**

Have not read the book. I don't get the premise.

So Richard's/Goose's future self made a trip back in time to set everybody's lives on the right path? Or he died in the frost under the bridge? In that case, it would be his ghost that comes back, not his future self? Does he have two selves - one a kid whose actions are about to begin a life downspin; and one a time-traveling adult (older self or ghost of self)?

Not to get all snarky and science-y, but how can two of the same people occupy the same-or-similar time and space? I guess the future self, virtually omniscient - because it knows the life Goose is leading and is going to lead - could be manifesting from some other dimension? Other than the Returning Ghost theory, that's all I can come up with. Literature is replete with stories about a future/adult self coming back in time to educate the younger self and set it on the right path, but usually some explanation is given. In this film, however, nothing is laid out. Some may say that's a strength, but as you can tell from my puzzlement, for me it's a weakness.

The only thing that I think I get is that the story has exchanged the archetypal Mysterious Stranger/Christmas Ghost/Christmas Angel for a slightly more pragmatic, "realistic" tale of a visit from a lad's future self. I get that, but the mechanism escapes me.
