Among many things that didn't gel, what do you think of Maria...(spoiler)

...telling "Madame" how much she will miss her and vice versa, and then going up the 6th floor to f1.k her husband? that didn't really make her seem like a very nice person (not taking into consideration that there was zero sexual chemistry between the two to begin with).

I know, that irritated me too.

The film started off well enough, but by the end I really disliked it.

Yeah, that was really off-putting. Suzanne (the madame) wasn't very well developed, but she never seemed like a bad person. She absolutely didn't deserve this unexpected backstabbing from the otherwise likable Maria.

In spite of this awkward and sour ending, which was clearly meant to be a happy one, I still enjoyed the movie. The cast is great and for the most part it's a very pleasant story.

I took her actions as her helping to repair their marriage by suggesting he move back and so, reconcile with his wife.

There was a lack of sexual chemistry between the two actors, which made their sexual liaison lacking in credibility. I wish that had been omitted from the film. He could have fallen in love with her and found her at the end without the fling.

Interesting take, Poppy, and I tend to agree. Maybe she knew he saw her naked in the bath that day and could feel his attraction increasing over time so she gave him what he wanted that once by indulging his curiosity so he could go on with his marriage and life. The fact she took off without telling him she was leaving and saying goodbye proves that in my opinion.

The character of Madame Suzanne was made to be naive - she isn't a bad person, she just doesnt know any better. She seemed uneducated, she said it herself at some point that she was a "farm" girl - unlike the highly educated and cultured Parisian elite. She had a limited intellect, had no real interests in life, except for gossip, lunch, getting hair/nails done, pick up cake, doesnt even take care of her own kids, etc etc ... does that sound familiar?

Maybe I'm a little uptight, but I agree with you. When Maria was in front of Jean-Louis I could not believe that she would accept the kiss and then to sleep with him, because she had told Suzanne that she would miss her. It was quite dishonest, especially because Fabrice Lucchini aka Jean-Louis is not a Don Juan himself and she doesn't seem attracted, at least physically, by him. Plus they have a big age difference and beautiful Maria can find whomever she wants to marry her. She's so pretty. So I was very surprised when I saw them in bed together. The end is also surprising and doesn't make any sense; I think that a good ending would have been Jean-Louis and Suzanne managing to overcome the situation by adopting a new view on life itself and a new attitude in their own marriage. But JL rushing to Spain 3 years later is a quite idiotic ending for me. This being said I enjoyed this film a lot.

I didn't have a problem with this. It's established in the film that Maria had a child with a previous employer (Don Pedro) and explains why her aunt (Carmen Maura) works so hard at keeping them apart. The film is supposed to be a Gallic quirky black comedy much in the style of other films like Tanguay, Potiche, Tatie Danielle, etc. I thought the ending was delightful.

As for Jean-Louis not being attractive (he was supposed to be goofy and cute), has nobody seen The Hairdresser's Husband?

It´s like they couldn´t choose between a platonic relationship and sexual tension so they decided to have it both ways.
