What was said at the ending? (spoiler)

After Jean-Louis speaks to María's son, he sees her carrying a basket of laundry and passing two women who are seated. Someone says "How is your daughter?" Was this one of the seated women inquiring about María's daughter? If so, it would most likely mean that María is married. However, the look between María and Jean-Louis at the very end seems to be romantic, suggesting that they will continue with a relationship.

What is your take on the ending?

Do you think Jean-Louis will congratulate María on her being happily married, living with her son and a daughter, or is the intention of the film that of a standard romance, of separated lovers reuniting and living 'happily ever after'?

Jean-Louis certainly appears to be enjoying his new freedom, driving around Spain in a snappy convertible (was that actually a Corvair?!)?

reply

I thought it was Maria who asked about the daughter. Yes that was a Corvair.

reply

I thought Maria had a daughter and that it was from her brief liaison with Jean-Louis because she was not wearing a wedding ring.

Yes, that makes sense. She may have gotten pregnant that time when they had a quickie right before she left. I think that's what was implied.

Isnt there a place where people can exchange Q&A about movies? Real answers of what was implied by the producers/director, not just two-cent opinions thrown on this board ...

I heard the same thing and then looked at her hand: no wedding ring... So I thought that Maria had a daughter with Jean-louis. Period.

reply

I agree. I thought the daughter was theirs (Maria % Jean-Louis). Otherwise, Maria would have not smiled that way she saw him.

I also believe the daughter mentioned is lightning striking twice with Maria getting pregnant by an "owner" as she called them.

I don't get the way she looked at him at the very end. So getting pregnant was all that had to happen to get her to look at Jean-Louis that way when she never had before that moment? I believe she didn't love him throughout the movie. Did she pine away for Miguel's father for three years after he was born? I found it a bit incongruent.

However, I liked the film overall. The part I loved the most was the exuberance of the women when they were together. No wonder Jean-Louis loved being around them.
