What's with all the stupid puns and play on words?

They're actually trying to do lame word play while at the same time trying to be serious and present a documentary of a murder.

Thank God I'm not the only one. My girlfriend and I watched this episode this morning and were cringing at how poor the writing was. Some amateur got it in his head that he was going to turn in an astoundingly clever script I guess.

"Even though he is a rookie, Elkins was like a Heisman winning quarterback. He was the right pick for the job."

What?

"The answer pealed louder than a church tower at noon on Sunday."

Umm, okay.

"They were struck harder than a pedestrian getting hit by a car in a crosswalk."

Wow.

"They were on the suspect like a bloodhound on a scent."

Geez.

"They were on the right track, like a bloodhound on a scent."

Okay, used that one twice now...

I have to imagine the poor narrator thought twice about doing this one. The scriptwriter made him sound like a moron. This was my first experience watching the show, so I hope the other episodes are not like this. If they are, I can only suspect the scriptwriter is someone's brother or cousin.

Got some more goodies for ya...

"When Prince takes a closer look, it seems Tammy has taken quite a beating" Jesus.

"He also notices that a cord is wrapped tightly around her neck, sure seems like someone was mighty mad at Tammy" You've got to be kidding me.

"He notices Tammy's purse is wedged under her body, it seems like she didn't get a second to enjoy her morning cup of joe" WTF?!

These are all from an episode titled "Prescription for murder" about a young prison nurse that was raped and murdered.

This was brutal to watch. I can't believe this show is still on the air!

I'm with you and your girlfriend all the way. It's annoying as hell.

I almost forgot my favorite one:

"The detectives got there faster than you can say 'lickety split.'"

On second thought, I think the rednecks from Lizard Lick Towing must have written the script.

reply

That one was hilarious. There was also another quote about how they had to get their suspect before it's too late but he was already in custody.

Anyway, It was so hot outside today that I stayed inside and watched Investigation Discovery.

This is my first time watching this show and i had to get online just to see if anyone felt the same way lol I wasn't even really paying attention to the show and I only put it on there because deadly women was about to come on. While on my phone I hear "the confessions were piling up like interest on student loans" I checked to see if I was on the right channel. "The case grew colder than a corn crop in an early frost" what?? Did a farmer kill a college student because of unpaid debt??

This show is like a balloon on a warm summer day.

It's full of hot air.

I actually find it to be very distracting from the actual content of the show. and weird. all of the similes and metaphors seem so flowery and playful in contrast to the subject matter.

reply

exactly

reply

I came on here just to see if this bothered anyone else. They use way too many cutesy similes for such serious subject matter. It's really inappropriate. I also don't care for all the tangents they go off on to discuss the hobbies of investigators. Who cares about that sort of thing when you're talking about a murder?

reply

I actually like this about this show. Nightmare Next Door and Unusual Suspects are both kinda interesting like this. The reason I like these shows is to see the people involved, and I feel that they at least make an attempt at giving the viewer this. I prefer it to the endless reenactments by Australian actors with horrible American accents. Have you all ever watched City Confidential? It is a lot like this show, narrated by an awesome actor who basically sounds drunk the whole time.

reply

thats funny I thougt of the same thing when you mentioned city confidential and noticed the Twin Peak background Music!

reply

I don't mind seeing the people involved in the investigations, but I just think the cutaways to fun hobbies is out of place and inappropriate with regards to the subject matter. Overall I feel that the writing for this show is insensitive to the victims and their families.

These puns you all are posting are cracking me up. I thought i was the only one who thought the puns were overkill (no pun intended on THAT one...oh gosh, I'm becoming one of them!!) Today, I loved, "Even though they weren't calling long distance, the police were still racking up the charges."

reply

Also with the puns...how about the actors that play the suspects and look at the camera and have that mean or serious look or mad look? It is really cheesy

reply

I find this program very interesting and worthwhile viewing but, yes, I am put off by the awful cliched puns and dialogue. They should cut it out. It's just not necessary, it adds nothing to the program and it comes off looking unnecessary cheap and tacky -almost as if they think the viewers are idiots or something. With a bit more professionalism on the part of the script writers/narrators, this show could be a masterpiece

I also agree with the actors playing the suspects and looking at the cameras and the close up shots of the cops with tough poses and all that -cut it out! It is IRRITATING!

reply

"The case has gone as cold as thanksgiving leftovers, and all that is left for detectives is to reheat some stale theories."
... and then ...
"Maybe the lab will warm up this cold case, and put the killer in the hot seat."

reply

I don't have Investigation Discovery anymore sadly now that I'm back to basic cable but I do get to see this show on the Discovery Channel in the mornings. I find this show very interesting. I thought I was the only one that noticed the puns and similes. It's like they are trying to be playful about serious subject like murder

reply

It reminds me of the puns from that show "1000 ways to day" or whatever it's called
