I smell Oscar bait!

And the last time Besson tried his hand at something "serious" he gave us The Messenger.

I agree with you.
Alias this will not win anything.
The story is important the acting is good but the film is not great.
Michelle Yeoh ... Aung San Suu Kyi good performance.
David Thewlis ... Michael Aris and playing his brother is also very good.

Aung San Suu Kyi story should be told her personal sacrifice for democracy is astounding. Sadly this film is not GREAT.
But I did enjoy it I liked it but its just not Oscar worthy.
I believe this film was made at the cost of some being arrested.

The non-violent fight for democracy continues in Burma and it brings
Aung San Suu Kyi story to the big screen to those who don't watch or care about the news.
All that is for the good.
But its not a great film. It's still well worth a look.
The Lady Aung San Suu Kyi is a hero.

Love film love cinema keep the suits at bay.

Completely agree with the above.
No chance of an Oscar, there are plenty of films that actually deserve one...

Yeoh was up against too much good competition that year:

Meryl Streep – The Iron Lady as Margaret Thatcher (winner)

Glenn Close – Albert Nobbs as Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis – The Help as Aibileen Clark
Rooney Mara – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as Lisbeth Salander
Michelle Williams – My Week with Marilyn as Marilyn Monroe
