Apparently they came back with 17 hours(!) of footage, all shot surreptitiously with a hidden camera. According to the presskit about "thirty or so shots" in the movie came from that footage.

Apart from some footage smuggled out of Burma (the message at the end of the film says people who filmed it were in prison)
in a radio interview Michelle Yeoh herself said that some scenes were filmed in Thailand...I also read on wikipedia that director Luc Besson also filmed some scenes in Burma.
