Not very convincing?
Although I quite enjoyed this, was I alone in finding it almost completely unconvincing? I just didn't really believe it at all, from the power wielded by Metzler as leader of the council (in my experience leaders of local councils have virtually no power at all), to the love-interest sideplot (whose mother conveniently worked at the very institution being investigated) and even down to Sam's occasional moments of lucidity which seemed to arrive at the most precisely convenient moments in terms of the level of intrigue the plot had built up. The threat element didn't really work for me, I didn't ever really feel Tom was in much danger, the beating administered by Sam seemed wildly over the top and far more than was necessary to stop Tom finding out what was in the file. In fact, I would venture that it was so over the top it would likely make Tom much more determined to find out rather than deterring him. I also didn't buy that Tom was the sort of character who would flee for eighteen years rather than trying to find out why his dad did what he did. He's a journalist after all, wouldn't he have been the least bit curious, especially as it was a complete one off and Sam never laid a finger on him beyond that.
I guwess in general I wasn't that keen on the thriller element of the plot, I would have much preferred a character study and drama about alzheimers, which I think the marketing made it out to be. The thriller elements just weren't particularly successful for me.
