Help me understand the timing.

I just watched the movie. The time frame jumps from 1950s back to Ward's time of 1918-1922. In those segments Ward and Christmas look to be 30-40 years old. Yet they are both supposed to have been alive during the Civil War. To be 5 even at the very latest date of the Civil War they would have had to have been born by 1860. That would make them 58 at the youngest in 1918. Yet neither looked a day over 40. I was very confused by that.

I'm answering my own question. Ward was born in 1856 and Christmas in 1857. That would make them 62 and 61 in the 1918 time frame where the action of the movie starts, especially Ward's romance with Lucy. The movie also implies that Christmas dies alone. He didn't. I found one source that indicated Christmas earned enough money hunting to put his grandchildren through college!

I thought the same thing with the time frame. Guess nobody would watch it with 2 old geezers in the role.
