6.8? Wow.

I don't think anything is a '10', but this is as close as possible to a perfect genre piece. I can't think of a piece of writing that better fit an actor.

Some dialogue is so good, it just makes one want to rewind just to hear the words over and over.

I think people who dislike it should not rate it because it's like judging a football game when one doesn't even enjoy the sport.

But if you like the genre, you cannot dislike this.

Apparently you don't understand the imdb. Probably two-thirds of the morons who rated it haven't seen it. It's a peculiar game that's played here.

I know, right? The second degree is so delicious!

But if you like the genre, you cannot dislike this.

The problem is you make an assumption that people who "like the genre" all like it for the same reasons. A lot of people like the James Bond crap. It's simple. Heroes and villains. Clear "motivations". Predictable. Somebody wins in the end. Lots of action.

I'm very sure many people came expecting this and got sorely disappointed not even getting the dialogs. People dont like to feel stupid.

I think a 6.8 is pretty generous. There's nothing aesthetically interesting about it, the story is kinda lame, and I'd even say some of the actors got boring parts that didn't highlight their skills (Rachel Weisz especially).

"I think people who dislike it should not rate it because it's like judging a football game when one doesn't even enjoy the sport. "

That's such a silly thing to say. That would be one dull discussion if everyone on the board liked it. I assume most people who watched it had some interest in either the actors or the genre, and can easily have something interesting and critical to say. Falling asleep during a film is a legitimate response.

I cannot imagine someone who enjoyed, say, 'Smiley's People' -not- enjoying this.

I just heard about this series recently, and watched Page Eight last night. What's not to like? A superb cast of top notch British and Australian (Judy Davis) actors, working with a great script. Nighy is the coolest MI5 guy since George Smiley (Guinness version!) or Stephen Rea in The Honourable Woman (the only worthwhile performance in that festival of tears).

Looking forward to the next two editions of this trilogy. I think the low IMDB score comes from either trolls or people who favor more action in their spy thrillers.

I gave it a NINE.

reply

Wow, indeed. Like you, I see 10s about as often as I see Halley's Comet. I gave it a 9, and am about to watch a third time shortly. I rarely watch anything even twice.

reply

I gave it a 9 as well, and could have easily been talked into a 10.

With this star-laden cast, you could only hope that the script would be good enough to match their collective talents. If anything, the script was even better. I wish we Americans could (or would) produce films like this as the Brits do with so much grace and ease.

great actors, great acting, by all.
i especially liked michael gambon and judy davis.
i did not care for the plot and the dialogue was not believable.
the filthy leftist propaganda was transparent and disgusting.

reply

So you prefer your filthy leftist propaganda more opaque? :D

I think the dialogue was as 'realistic' as such things can be. Unfortunately, if you talked the way -any- professionals really talk, outsiders will never understand so a certain amount of 'exposition' always has to go on.

To paraphrase Orwell, facts are (at some point) unpleasant things. Even if yer a right-wing-defense-hawk I think it's pretty clear now that the issues presented are valid. Johnny's character is, to my mind, in no way some kind of leftie. He just strikes me as a guy who sees things have gone too far... and since he has no family, a low self-opinion, drinks too much, he figures he doesn't have much to lose. Similar in some ways to Smiley.

So it seems pretty realistic. Happy, well-adjusted 'lefties' don't do these things.

Now that said... I recently saw the other 2 episodes of 'the trilogy' and they are truly mediocre -and- 'leftie' by comparison.

reply

I thought it was very good. I actually watched part 2 first, which stood up like a David Mamet play ;)

Agree it's a great piece. I think most people (someone called them morons, I call them the bovine masses) are so used to having the Hollywood bs spoon fed to them that they can't understand or pay attention to such well written work like this that evolves without a bunch of glam bam boom.

I love the understated dialogue. You either get it or you are so full of your own crap that you can't see / hear it

Superb British genre production with some consummate actors. Only quibble is the fulcrum of the plot - how would geeky civil servants miss the info on page 8?
