i believe it was reported last year that this would be the final season. Kristin has a new show and Don's going back to films full time

Bell has been quoted recently as having intended to juggle both shows if HOL was renewed. The cancellation came yesterday.

weird. I could swear I read that supposedly it was the last season. Though perhaps they hoped for a bump in ratings and if so maybe they'd have brought it back for a 6th

though it's a fitting end. 5 seasons ain't bad. I was honestly worried it may not even go past 2

From Variety, two days ago on May 17:

Mike Schur is in a good place. Make that “The Good Place.” The prolific producer’s latest effort — a high-concept comedy starring Kristen Bell and Ted Danson ......Yet Schur didn’t think Bell would be able to come on board because of her commitment to Showtime’s “House of Lies.” He approached her anyway, and a deal was struck that allowed her to juggle “The Good Place” with a potential sixth season of “House of Lies.”

I'm disappointed but not surprised. Even though the characters really popped, the plot didn't have anywhere new to go. The calibre of acting was sublime. I'm a huge fan of Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell. Clyde and Doug constantly cracked me up. Just in this last episode alone, when Doug goes on about keeping his temple pristine for the TED talk and they all ignore him. Then Doug says Black Lives Matter when Marty is asked to step outside the car. I laughed out loud twice before starting credits were even done!!

I laughed out loud so many times in this show, and I rarely do that on supposed comedies. Sure it was more risque than many shows and most characters had the moral compass of a gnat but those are often the types attracted to this career. The way they did it, you could clearly see underneath all that pride and greed, they were flawed insecure beings.
RIP House of Lies. Just please close it off with Marty and Jeannie getting together :)

Not surprised. This show went downhill real fast. Season 5 was atrocious. Too bad because the first couple seasons were really good. Oh well.
