AT first i thought he was gay, now i dont understand.

Wtf is going on?

reply

Seems to be a consequences of the new liberal crap culture of today.Obviously kids trying to get attention.

Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.

reply

"liberal crap culture," "Life, Liberty, Pursuit of Happiness," so you're saying that's "Crap Culture." Interesting.

reply

That's quite simple, actually. Roscoe's always been bisexual/pansexual, I don't remember which episode stated that, but that was quite a long time ago. So to him, boy or girl - doesn't matter, as long as he's attracted to them.

He also happens to like some things that are considered 'feminine,' like makeup and colorful clothing, in addition to liking things that are considered 'masculine.' This has nothing to do with his sexuality, it's just gender expression. He could've been gay, straight, asexual, so it's purely accidental that he happened to be bi. He identifies as a boy, he's totally comfortable with the genitalia and the body he has, so he's male. Just because our culture decided to put certain things into 'male' category and others in the 'female' one, doesn't mean that men can't wear makeup (like he does), or that women can't wear pants - and that has been thought of as appropriate for men only in the Western world for thousands of years. So it's simply things you like and things you don't like. Don't label everything, it's really not necessary.

Now, Lex is a transgender, I think. They have never confirmed that, so I'd guess he's either that or bigender/agender. Anyhow, Roscoe's referring to him as 'he' (although he used the term 'girlfriend,' that's why we can't really be sure what he is.) He was born a girl, but feels like a boy, so he's a boy. Or maybe he doesn't feel like he's either of those things, or both, or can flip it like a switch. Who he's attracted to, we don't know for sure, all we know is that he likes men and doesn't mind them being both masculine and feminine at the same time.

Will we even see Lex in season 4?

reply

Most men on TV wear makeup so doing so doesnt make you gay or straight. I think he was merely exploring himself as a maturing young man and now we're seeing him appear to become more in touch with his masculine side. Keep watching, I'm sure it'll all unfold during the next season or so.

reply

Would you be so nice as to stop promoting queer erasure? Thank you.
Actors wear makeup to cover imperfections that would be visible on camera. Most male characters on TV, however, do not wear makeup as in eyeliner, eyeshadows, or nail polish. So it was very nice of the show creators to introduce a teen character who does. I doubt Roscoe's supposed to 'grow out' of it, his style of course changes as often happens - when you're a teenager you usually experiment with it and you don't wear quite the same things when you're 12 and 14. In the beginning of the show Roscoe's been wearing lots of colorful clothes and then there was a lot of black outfits. It doesn't mean than him wearing makeup and 'girly' things was just a phase. He was shown wearing makeup this season.

reply

I'm not promoting gay for I personally could care less what a person does that doesn't affect me. Please don't try to use straw man arguments, I was simply saying just because he use make up and colorful clothing doesn't make him gay. I don't know what show you're watching, but I've never seen him initiate a kiss or have sex with a male character.

reply

Yes, of course, using makeup does not make a man gay, I never said that. But I don't think I know what show you're watching, because Roscoe himself said that he likes both girls and boys. I don't remember what episode it was or even what season, but that scene was there. He even invited two of his friends whom he was attracted to (a boy and a girl) over to his house to play video games, and Marty asked his dad if those two were the ones his son's been talking about.
Also, Lex can actually be seen a male character, because Roscoe's been using male pronouns when talking about Lex. Also, there was some douchey guy he's been interested in, who ended up hitting on Jeanne in quite an ugly manner and she later told Roscoe that he's so much better as a person than that guy.
Like I said, stop trying to erase queer characters, or confuse homosexuality and bisexuality.

reply

Liking the same sex and not actually doing the do doesn't make a person gay or not. Like I was saying before, it's never been made a fact that he's text book gay. Let's all wait and see where the writers take his character, to me he's a maturing young person trying to figure out his way of the world. Confused homosexually isn't a clinical term that I'm aware of. And just for the record, I'm repulsed at the idea of gays but I understand that like we all, what we do is our own business and who are we to judge.

reply

For the hundredth time, that character was never supposed to be gay. What are you talking about?

Confused homosexually isn't a clinical term that I'm aware of.

Me neither. But how about we stay on the subject? What character in this show has been 'confused homosexually'? But anyway, this is a subject about Roscoe, so let's discuss him and not other people. Oh wait.. Did you mean Roscoe was confused? I'd rather say it's you who are confused. Like I said, he flat out admitted he's into all sexes. In other words, bisexual or pansexual.

I'm repulsed at the idea of gays

Wow, I never would have thought!!!

By the way, liking the same sex 'and not actually doing the do' DOES make you gay. Or are you saying that before you started having sex you weren't straight? And priests or people who chose to be celibate for whatever reason but still find the opposite sex and the opposite sex only attractive aren't straight? What are they then? lol

reply

Some people will always have trouble understanding. It's like old people racism. They grew up in another era.

Good on you northern_girl for standing up for what is right. Eventually the crotchety folks who can't be loving, supportive, or understanding will fade away. Time heals all wounds.

or that women can't wear pants - and that has been thought of as appropriate for men only in the Western world for thousands of years.

The "western world" as an idea and a culture hasn't been around for thousands of years. Try to not be so dramatic and inaccurate when making your bleeding heart arguments.

It's kids challenging gender norms.

20-30 years ago, Lex would be a tomboy, riding a boys bike, wearing jeans, playing sports....

20-30 years ago Roscoe would be a boy into Arts, home ec, ...

Now it's a broader thing.

In Japan there are some people in the 20's who don't recognize gender at all.

He's not in a box, that's pretty much been the whole thing with his character, from the beginning. I don't understand the "acting like a gender thing," Have you not seen the commercial "We changed all that." I just saw this movie again recently called A league of their own, great movie, helped break some stereotypes, based on a true story, it's awesome.

^THIS

I'm impressed by the actor playing Roscoe. He's not a cookie cutter boring teen. He actually is 3 dimensional

reply

Thats why they are in there. And doing an excellent job!

reply

It was partially explained. Lex was "born a girl", and currently identified as a "boi" or "grrrl."

Roscoe is...gay (the elipses requires a digression from which I'll refrain in this comment), and accepts Lex as a fellow person who wishes for self-determination. So, it makes sense that Roscoe is attracted to Lex as a boy, affirming Lex's identifying as a boy, as well as affirming his (Roscoe's) homosexuality.

This is not so difficult.
