Disappointing finale

caps off Homeland's worst season.

This show went from compelling and prescient to obvious and preachy.

I thought this was one of the best seasons, if not the best. Very topical and a lot like what is really happening in the country, but that finale, certainly not satisfying after that rollercoaster ride that was the second half of the season. Why did they do that? I can only imagine that they will fire it up again next year. I just hate waiting. I think Keane's resignation was just something that character would not do. I was even accepting of the crazy operation in Russia which there was no way that would ever happen.

Also, it plays right along with the establishment narrative that Russia is behind all this, when we don't really know that yet and it has not been proven. I think Americans are tired of trust me. For God's sake ... how do we trust them when it's been 50 years and they do not even release everything they have on the Kennedy assassination?

There are major forces working hard to undermine Americans' faith in government so private interests can take over everything.

reply

Too bad that you couldn't appreciate it, I thought it was the most powerful season yet.

I thought the show jumped the shark last season. First 5 seasons are peak tv. The last two? not so much.

The writing has gone south. I actually felt sorry for Mandy Patinkin b/c there was so little for him to work with this season.

But with ratings down again, next season is officially the last. It's time.

reply

Oh, well, I am enjoying it.

And any show needs to close after this long, regardless of the ratings. Eight seasons is a long time to keep the quality up, and Carrie isn't unbreakable.

The only thing I predicted was that President Keane would resign, and indeed she did, that said it doesn't seem very realistic that she would have resigned after just getting it back.

reply

I think she finally actually realized that she was not, after all, what was best for the country, because her VP thought of that bipartisan solution, and she on her own did not. It was a rare moment of self-awareness.

reply

I think the point you made about Keane's resignation to be the "moment of self-awareness" is correct; it was a real curve ball for the finale. Given all the events that happened with Russian conspiracy; that caused her losing the presidency, how she fought it all off to just to resign at the end probably made everyone feel "much ado about nothing"?. However, it was the unexpected surprise that gave this season maybe more depth because it also tied into what Keane needed.

reply

Oh, also, she finally felt guilty over that witch hunt she perpetrated and realized there was no excuse.

reply

That was ridiculous, and I think it would have been ridiculous because she would have been vindicated to the people who I think, I hope, would have supported her. What a waste.

And the way the Senator did the right thing when he found out he had been used, and then snapped right back. That was ridiculous too. Not to mention trying to fly in on a diplomatic mission and drive out with machine guns to kidnap and extract a KGB agent in Russia.

Why waste all that time throughout the season on realism only to blow it all up at the end?

Glad you posted this.

I thought I was the only one. You should check out reddit. They liked it.

That whole episode was cringeworthy. From the wigs to carrie escaping the entire russia army and having her wait for them to catch up to her and still hiding enough seconds for the crew to get on a plane jet fast so they wont figure out they escaped and the girl turned her back on russia for no reason just because carrie said we're the same.

The entire like 5 episodes were rushed and crammed together making no sense from one bad storyline to the other.

I thought the season started pretty good then it took a nose dive.

The president angle was amazingly retarded without any indication or purpose. Why would they make her go rough just to regain it and lose it like it was nothing? One of the more interesting characters of the season? Seems to me they just wanted a shock finale for no reason.

reply

yeah, that was a poorly written scene.

And the staring then spitting scene is bad too.

I guess that was supposed to be dramatic and powerful -- but I found it painfully awkward.

The first 5 seasons were good. Dropped off last season and much more so this season.

I'm glad next season is the last.

Im not lol. Im a complete new comer and starting to like to the show despite its flaws. I like the American bashing and fantasy like political critique. Plus the lovely Claire Danes. I never wanted to give the show a chance. I hate political American propaganda garbage. I hate that they make Claire Danes look butch and old. Almost manly with wrinkles. I started watching the show by accident. Having recently watched Hitman and loving it. Being a fan of how Friend played Hitman I accidentally saw him in homeland. I thought he was strange on how he was limping and looked differently with hair and mustache also hobo. They had been giving the show a lot and having seen him in enough clips I decided to funnily give it a shot since I thought the character was vastly different in appearance from the movie but after watching a couple of episodes I felt the soul of the characters were the same. After awhile I got the idea that it was anti-american. Though originally I didnt want to watch the show thinking I'd hate Claire Danes in the show as a hard up American Security woman. I realized that she is a normal woman with real flaws. I liked the idea of a woman's president since I was going for Hillary and having enough shows of a black president I thought it was a nice twist. I also really like the actress portrayal of her. Having gotten to enjoy the 5th season and the 6th being around the corner. I decided to give the 6th a shot. I realized there are so many actors I like in it. Always been a big fan of the O'Keefe actor, Jake Weber, also Linus Roache, From Riddick and Vikings. Hill Harper. The general whos in episode one of the 6th season. I like the character Saul. From the sixth season I liked how it started with the hacker story like. O'keefe which is a spin on Bill O'Reilly. I really liked the resistance angle till they threw it out into the wind. I really liked the perceived romance between the president and Linus but they whole story didnt reach its end and got axed.

Completely once they ended that whole president story. I started to like the Russian story mostly because I like how the actor played the Russian bad guy and how some of it had its merit but then thats when the whole season took a nose dive for me. Everything that I liked about was killed off and it went into a fast frenzy to the finish line. With every story, scene, and plot crammed together. Everything being far fetched and unrealistic. The russians somehow caving in at every angle. Everything going Carries way and everything going right from one sec. to the next in every sec. Yea right. The Chinese russian spy wouldnt have escaped so easily. From the start I doubt the Americans would kill its high prized general over a couple of grand for the russians. Then the hacker somehow lives a couple of blocks away and is attracted to carrie and sells out for some whore vagina and somehow is by himself with no backup and gets tricked and beat up to give up the key so easily. Even though if he was a true hacker he couldve easily found out who she was and what she was about and not been so stupid and easily fallen for her trap as if pussy is worth that much money. He had all the angles and then somehow he lost out of nowhere. Also with all that info he didnt do anything afterwards nor did she turn him over the police though he was clearly a bad criminal. The resistance storyline was wiped from the face of the earth which I think it wouldve been over for any president. Killing so many innocent lives. O'Keefe never did anything wrong and they drew first blood by killing the dog and then shooting the kid. Threatening violence at every angle even after the presidents secretary was there and told him not to do so. The news angle was also so stupid. So news could easily report false news leading the death of many and not have any consequences that angle was ditched out with the resistance. The amount of law suits and reprecusions from the media was never explored.

Then the president was easily let go though in real life that would never happen and the governor is against America, then for, then against. They cant make up there mind. The tedious daughter story is strainous and she ends up giving her up after she fought so hard for her. Her helper friend crashes into the russian car and next thing we know he is in American without a scratch. They make the Russians seem so sleek and murderous one second and then so stupid and traitors the next. Saul pushes a high rank army general out of the van and demands they are immune and some how they comply with guns loaded. As if Russians ever give a fuck and as he has any power in another country all the while it being taken care of in a matter of secs. and then in a matter of millies. he's flight takes off just in time before Carrie is out with the most ridiculous wig so she can laugh while being punched in the face. They capture her and treat her pretty nice. Just taken her pills away and then easily trading her back. The russian spy easily sells out her home country and boyfriend after a few words from Carrie for no reason and nothing in return. Nobody recognizes her at the embassy or could tell shes wearing a wig and its not Carrie. Carrie runs around Russia and nobody can stop her or detain her. Even waiting for them to catch up to her. She isnt even immediately stopped by the swat in traffic or when she gets off her car and starts running around town. Every time the Russians give a valid statement of why they are acting in such ways she puts a blank stupid stare and justifies it as we're americans. I never liked the abuse they give to the American/ Russian spy. The amount of human rights abuse just on that is ridiculous and justifies any act the russians make. The season had a lot of premise to able to be good but ultimately it failed and it was a huge disappointment.
