Just watched season 1 (No spoilers please)

Just finished the first season, and I was very impressed. I Don't have showtime, so I had to buy it, but it was well worth it.

I've heard the next few seasons aren't so great. Is this true? I'd rather not spend my money to get them if they aren't very good.

No spoilers, please.

Homeland is by far my favorite series. Sure, it's had it's ups and downs, some seasons have been better than others, but it is well worth the watch!! To not give any spoilers, I'll just say there was half a season that had some teenage drama I could've done without, and then the last season, season 5, definitely had some low points IMO. But it's still my favorite show. The writing, directing, cinematography, and acting is phenomenal! I don't have Showtime either but I watched it for free on the ShowBox App. Or if you're into binge-watching, you can sign up for Showtime's Instant Watch App, where you can watch any show, any time. They have a free first month trial, so you can binge watch it all during that month and then cancel! That way you can watch it all free. And the show is so amazing, it's easy to binge watch. In fact, I enjoy it better that way!! I hope this helps, you should definitely continue watching.

They are good. After season 2 the show gets very different though imo. Is there not another way you could watch without commiting to buying the seasons?

reply

Tricky. It's good, but in the US, I would not be inclined to pay Amazon $22.48 for Season 2 [Blu-ray], especially when Amazon UK is only asking £4.15 for the same thing! Speaking of which, how come Season 5 has been on Amazon UK for a while but is still on pre-order at Amazon.com?!

reply

The whole show is amazing!

Just my opinion, seasons 1,2,4 and 5 were great.

Season 3 was awful, I stopped watching after 4 episodes and just read recaps online.

it's showtime free preview weekend this weekend, if you have Hulu (maybe other ones as well) you can binge watch it for free. :)

I'm streaming my way through Homeland now.

Just watched the episode where Brody kills the bomb vest maker. I didn't know who Damian Lewis was before I started. He's an exceptionally good actor, now I understand why he's in the mix to be next James Bond. Didn't think much of Claire Danes before this but the writing works to her strength. Morgan Saylor (Dana Brody) has a long and successful career in front of her.

My reason for watching is that F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus, The Grand Budapest Hotel), perhaps the greatest character actor of his generation. The only other actor in his class was Phillip Seymour Hoffman. But so far he hasn't appeared, the writing is so good I'm not bothered by that.

I better fucking hope not. Like every child actor she should go down the dark path and turn into a crackwhore by her 20s.

Save your money and get from the library. I really like all seasons, except 3.

What's wrong with Season 3?

I think Season 3 is good, but I admit I do not like the whole miserable torture that Carrie went through to run the scheme on Javadi. I have little love for Iran and any hardline Muslim country, but Javadi is more of a James Bond villain, and he is so out there it is hard to know if he is just there for dramatics or if he actually represents something real in the Iranian government? His execution of the soldier captured with Brody during his incursion into Iran was chilling and suggests absolutely no rule of law in Iran ... and I am not sure that is true ... at least as far as what law is to the radical Islamists. BUT, they do have to tell a story and they cannot be absolutely realistic, so I can look past most of the faults.

Then of course there was the shooting of Carrie in the arm ... something that would likely be impossible to do even by a trained sniper, and would have undoubted led to serious damage. I guess we are supposed to be used to that on TV

Also, the whole thing with Saul and his ( I hate to use this word now that the extreme Right-wing has weaponized it, but) "cuckolding" by his awful wife. And the idea that the acting head of the CIA would take work and put it on his home computer that is not even locked down enough to prevent a burglar from sucking it up is also far-fetched. In his professional life Saul is a competent spymaster, with normal human failings, but in his personal life as it is shown on "Homeland" he is a social retard with nothing going on in his life but the CIA, and more or less the same with Carrie.

This leads to me asking myself the question, is this show deliberately making a statement about spying in general and the CIA specifically that it completely dehumanizing to its agents and ultimately dehumanizing to the whole world with the wars and divisions it causes?

I just happen to be re-watching it and since I have seen it once it makes me think about other things watching it again.

So far I rank the seasons as 1,2,4,5,3. But stick with it. it does get better after 3. And there is at least a season 6,7 and 8.

What is your problem with S3? I just wrong a long comment about it to the character limit above.

reply

A lot of viewers hated S3. I'm not one of them, but from what I've read, it's because they thought Brody should have been killed off at the end of S2, and because many have an unnatural hatred of Dana Brody.
