Martins death

Am i the only one who didn't realize Martin died in that short fall? I didn't even think it was a possibility (I didn't listen closely to what that woman was crying about). There was no funeral, and no disruption of any kind at his school. I think the director could have made a profound statement without creating a senseless tragedy. At the very least, the director should have made Martin's death clear to viewers.
