Question about ending

Did Sebastián kill himself?

reply

No. I saw a film at a special screening with a q&a, the director explained that it was just an unfortunate accident

reply

Sebastian, the teacher? No he doesn't,nor does Martin it's simply an accident that he falls off the wall when recovering the ball.

reply

Well, I saw him bleeding from his arms in that last scene. Where did that blood come from? It looks like he cut his veins. Or maybe I missed something, I didn't watch closely enough.

reply

well if you fall off a wall then you may bleed. But I was at a screening earlier this week where the director answered questions and he clearly said it was an accident. He should know.

reply

ok, but I'm talking about Sebastian, not Martin. I didn't realize Sebastian fell off a wall. Sebastian was the one bleeding in the last scene, watch again and you'll see.

reply

I agree there's some confusion regarding whether Sebastian would actually die of bleeding (plenty of shots of his wrist/arm bleeding and Martin also says that "you're losing a lot of blood" or something to that effect). My guess is that he would because he's too miserable to get out of the building and get help.

There're some more ambiguities in the movie as well, for example when Sebastian's girlfriend asks him abt what "horrible" thing had happened that he mentioned on the phone, it's not clear whether he's making up the response about his brother's incorrect analysis....it's not even clear whether he DID have any kind of sexual feelings for Martin.

reply

The whole point of the movie is about desire in both main characters. The boy's adolescent attraction for his teacher which brings out of Sebastian desires he didn't realise he was capable of . The film follows this development and Sebastian intends to tell his gf about the boy's behaviour but in the intervening time his feelings about Martin have begun to develop.
At the screening the director said that nothing actually happened between them other than the boy touching Seb while he was sleeping. Before he can respond to his feelings about Martin, the boy dies in the wall accident.

Exactly! And no, I didn't think he was going to die at the end. His wrist was bleeding from breaking the glass. He was just drunk and going through grief and guilt and confusion and all that. I think it was good at least that he cried at the end, letting some of it out.

reply

Ok Sebastian the teacher had blood on him because he smashed a window to break into the school where he taught Martin. He goes to the showers where he imagines he sees Martin and they kiss but it's all in his imagination.

reply

It would have been helpful if the director explained why it didn't even seem possible that Martin died in the short fall. I only realized it when I read about it in Wikipedia (they even opine that it may have been suicide)! This is by far the most obscure (and unecessary) death of a main character I've ever seen, and totally re-wrote the ending (I kiss dead people) It may have worked poetically if it was clear that Martin was killed. I didn't even think he was hurt.

reply

No. He was cut on the glass when he broke into the gymnasium.

reply

Sebastion definitely did not. You might mean the student Martin, and no, that was an accident.
