Huge mistake killing main character

Death of main character, Martin, was a pointless,detrimental tragedy. There was plenty of room for poignancy between Sebastion and Martin without killing a 16 year-old. Big mistake. Was the director trying to duplicate The Sixth Sense at the end? I kiss dead people?
