Great....til the ending (Spoilers)

Im not one for pretty little bow endings, but doesn't anyone notice that all the characters are now severely worse off by the end then when they started.

Unless I couldnt understand a character giving away some pivotal info, this is what I got...

Bill didnt care abt his kids. Grew to know and love them. Now he's going to jail again.... But this time he has people on the outside he feels the need to protect, but cant.

Jimmy and Dean are to be protected by Roxy. The whore of a bunch of coke heads. She not only told Bill they will come looking for her, but one of the last words out of Terrys mouth was how he is going to ruin Jimmy too. Im sure Dean wouldnt be safe either.

Am i missing something? Did Andy Serkis' character say anything that implied him and his family were now protected species? Cause all I picked up from that was Andy wanted to kill Bill, but didnt have the ability to do it there without getting busted.

Yes, the time done in prison cancelled out the reprisals Bill would have had after whacking the drug runners for the main gangster. Coupled with the fact that Bill was NO threat in the future, he just wanted his kid out of their clutches. Main gangster appreciated this, but made it clear that his 'credit' had been used up, no more favours in the future. Their paths would not have crossed again.

bill wont go to jail, it was self defence, plus he has his bar friend as a witness

andy serkis inplied that he would let him off because he served 8 years for him but warned him not to mention it again and that it wouldnt save him next (if there is a next time) so its sort of implied t and his gang wont bother bill again not to mention half his gang were running scared.

roxy had a good heart she just had a bad life doesnt mean she cant care or look after the kids

Finkle, Bill went to a pub frequented by known criminals. He's broken the terms of his parole. So I think he is going back to jail for eighteen months. But now he has something to live for when he gets out.

its a public house he cant control where everyone is

reply

Doesn't matter if it's a pub; he's not supposed to associate at all with known criminals, and he's already been warned off T, Dickie and Pill by the police. By his parole conditions, he should have legged it as soon as he saw who was in the pub. And nether he nor T nor Pill is going to tell the police about the drugs and "employing" young kids (Glen might not have been best pleased). So it looks like Bill walked into the pub and just started laying into T and Pill (everybody else has scarpered).

...and that's exactly the point really, about what makes the ending so good. As I said in another thread here, it doesn't really matter whether or not he goes to prison again, as he now has a family and something to come back to. The last exchange between Bill and Dean speaks volumes about the distance both father and sons have travelled in rebuilding something for the future, and the desire not to let it go whatever happens to get in the way. It's a really good ending - in fact, the more I think about it, the more I appreciate it.

I knew nothing about this before watching it tonight, and I'm happy to say, it's one of the best 'surprise'viewings I've had for a long long time.

I think OP here didn't understand what the guy was saying and I didn't either until coming here. Still a terrible ending thus ruining the film.

It was completely clear to me what happened there. Bill came to the pub to meet T. He wanted jimmy out and told him so. Was hoping to get things done the nice way.

T is a bastard and thought he could run over Bill, but got busted on that one.

Surely Glen wanted to save face and therefore gave Bill the crappy speech, "granting" him his son.

What was crappy about the ending is, how (or if you will why) he got arrested. In another thread it is pretty much layed out why the police shouldn't know about the fight.

Lokis_angels, there had been a gunshot, and a bloodied T and Pill are lying on the floor of Callahan's, and the place has plainly been trashed.

Keith, the landlord, is hardly likely to be able to say nothing happened, and although T and Pill are unlikely to admit they got their butts kicked by Bill, the police are not stupid. Bill turns up, plainly having been in a fight, and in they are going to put two and two together to make four.

The police have cars and Bill is on foot, slowed down from returning in his unsuccessful attempt to wash off the blood, and he can only move as fast as Jimmy, who is after all much shorter. He also has his little interlude with Glen.

reply

Granted. I agree with everything. But then, how would the police know to go and check at the pub?

reply

The gunshot sound? What about the nervous guy with the newspaper who leaves suddenly? Does he go to the police?

The restitution of life is no great feat. A variety of deaths may well enter into your punishment
