DVD

Does anyone know where I can get a DVD copy of this?

reply

You can't, everyone involved decided that it should never be released on dvd. I even e-mailed the National Theatre and they informed me that I was SOL and the only way to see it is in theaters.

Which is BS. I read the thread on BC fans and the thread / email talks about the ephemeral nature of theatre and what not.

Bull. And I say that as a person who goes to my local theatre about monthly. I mean, they're not incorrect about the nature of theatre being "fleeting", but that's the whole point of recording it on video. Then it's not fleeting.

Oh but the energy of the actors...

Yes well it was the audience of the production as it was filmed. It's no different to a sports event that was filmed, say a grand final game.

You want to know why it's not being released on DVD? Money. They're worried that if they release DVDs, people will pirate those, or even buy them legit - and stop going to the theatre. They're worried about the revenue from the theatre tickets becoming in jeopardy.

If they were truly worried about it from "artistic" reasons, then they never would have filmed it in the first place. What they're trying to do is have their cake and eat it to. Film it, reach a larger audience that will pay to see it, but then claim "artistry" by not releasing it later.

And I personally think it's elitist snobbery. Let's say you're some kid working on an assignment in 10 years time, they've stopped the ability to compare this play. Granted it's only one play, but I remember in high school working on Macbeth and comparing those.

It's just theatre people, in the name of "art" (money), preventing people around the globe from seeing their work. It's foolish and stupid.

Exactly. They claim that NT Live allows millions to see the performances around the world. The only problem with that is no theaters within a two hundred mile radius broadcasts these shows. The only one that aired near me was Hamlet with Cumberbatch and I honestly found that to be pretty disappointing. I don't know why they just don't wait a year or two and release it later on Blu-Ray or DVD. That's really the only way most people would be able to see them. The RSC and Shakespeare's Globe have at least realized this and give us home video releases. If only the National would get their pretentious heads out of their asses.

Not for nothing, but this is why people bootleg... not that I support stealing of any kind.

Both versions were excellent, and only one other person I know has even heard of it. It's kind of a shame that such a jewel should be squirreled away while most of today's entertainment is so mediocre. Oh well.
