Cast List

Why isn't the whole cast listed? Jim-Bob and Elizabeth aren't listed. (I know they were in the series but just wondering why they weren't listed here.) The Baldwin sisters aren't listed, Ike isn't listed, the sheriff isn't listed ..... those actors/actresses aren't the same as the series. Like I said ..... just wondering.

I agree. I remember seeing this movie when it was first shown. One actor left off was (I think) Cleavon Little a black preacher who helps John-Boy.
Another one was a famous character actor who played Robin Hood to poor families. I can picture him but can't recall his name but he was in many movies and tv series. I don't remember who played the sheriff but he didn't return when the series started. He was a jerk to the Robin Hood so maybe he didn't get reelected. :)

I just replied to the original poster on what I found out on this. My reply is on this thread.

I believe you're thinking of William Windom. He played the lead in the TV series The Farmer's Daughter opposite Inger Stevens.

Yes I came here to look at the cast list to find out who played the Baldwin sisters and i was disapointed to see so many actors are missing. I have no idea why they are missing. I guess it just takes some research somewhere else to find out who played what roles and submit them. But you know what, earlier today I looked up the sheriff by his name and it does show under his credit this movie but I wonder if it is because it is listed under the Waltons that he shows up because he also appeared in an episode of the TV show. And I am sure that it shows up under Jim-Bob's credits because I looked at his too. Weird.

Well after going back and searching I found out why. It has a duplicate listing. The other listing has a picture of the DVD cover and a full listing and lots of details. They probably don't know they have it twice. Actually what I have realized is this one here I believe is listed correctly for it was a TV Movie on its own and not part of The Waltons TV series. However it is listed under "The Waltons" as episode 1 which is not really correct. When you search on IMDB by the name "The Homecoming: A Christmas Story" you come to this one. To find the other one you have to go to "THe Waltons" and then click on the episode guide to get to it. That one really needs to changed to the way this one is listed and then this one would need to be deleted because the other one has more details on it. Thing is the other doesn't have its own messageboard like this one. It is just a Waltons messageboard. If it was changed then it would then have it's own board but I have no idea how that is changed.

Here is the other with the full cast

Oh after looking up the Baldwin sisters from the movie I found out something interesting. In real life they both died only 2 days apart. One died on June 2, 1998 at age 101 and the other died on June 2, 1998 at age 94. I may have their ages backwards but the dates are right. I thought that was such a coincidence.

It appears that the tv movie page has now been fully updated with the cast. I disagree though about this page needing to be deleted, it's the other page that needs to be deleted. This movie was never part of THE WALTONS tv series package, either in reruns or airings and is a wholly different project as much as the later tv movies are. I don't know why IMDb has included it in the series episodes but that one needs to go. I've noticed IMDb has done this on several occasions stuck a tv movie pilot in with the episodes of the program which spawned from the tv film even if the casts are different or if the tv series came a few years later!

Actually, I believe it was probably meant to be the pilot episode that launched the series. It seems that it wasn't uncommon for the pilot episodes, of past series, to be a little or completely different from a series. I remember seeing a rerun of the Pilot to the old Leave it to Beaver Series. The actor that played the father was not the same actor that played him in the series. Now days, it seems like the premiere of a series is usually considered the pilot and first episode of a series.

THE HOMECOMING was never meant to be a pilot movie. It was conceived as a one-shot Christmas movie. However, television at that time was under fire for the violent crime and Western series on the air. When William S. Paley, the head of CBS, saw the film, he said it was the type of quality programming he wanted on his network and asked the producers if they could try to develop the characters and story into a television series.

Patricia Neal was still recovering from her stroke and did not want to do a weekly series. Andrew Duggan understood that John-Boy was to be the main character and said he didn't want to play second fiddle. Edgar Bergen was not well when he filmed the story, and so Will Geer was cast.

Joe Conley and John Crawford turned Ike and Sheriff Bridges into two quite different characters, less morally ambiguous.

Interesting stuff ... thanks for posting it.
