A review discussing cinema veritee
Although I suppose we could compare The Assault to United 93 because they are both about plane hijacking, I think the better comparison is with The Battle of Algiers which also draws on documentary styles to tell a part of the conflict between France and Algeria. When you tell the story of a terrorist attack, the most difficult part for the director is to put aside prejudice and tell the story for what it is. In this, I applaud Julien Leclercq. I think he has managed to produce a film of considerable emotional intensity while striking a balance in the representations of attackers and defenders. By every measure, this is an impressive film.
