Does he actually get struck by lightning?
Or is it a metaphor?

It is a metaphore but he's also actually killed by lighting, yes. I've heard that's the first scene in the film.
You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.

Hi Trying to cope with the amount of time I still have to wait to watch this you will find me lurking here
@OP I thought about using a spoiler tag but whoever enters this thread knows there is going to be an answer to the question asked in the title of it, so :P
I do think it's interesting to see people's reactions to the very first scene so when real life people ask me about it don't say anything about it. Just for the shock.
I just imagine myself not knowing that walking into the cinema and, wow, I'd probably start screaming when it happens

No it really isn't though- it's literally the very first thing that happens
I do apologize if you feel spoiled, but I promise, it's meant for you to know that right off :)
Oh Bambi, I cried so hard when those hunters shot your mommy. - Kurt Hummel
its not really a spoiler lol, you are supposed to know that he dies even before you see the movie :p
shareAlso... the movie is called Struck By Lightning. Unless you view this fact as the Worst. Spoiler. Ever., spoiler-whiners have no case.

It's in the summary, though. It's been public knowledge for over a year now.
shareNot any more so than Nicole Kidman is dead in Moulin Rouge

What? What? I never saw that! I'll have to go back and watch it again now... no, I don't think I could stand it a second time. Once was once too much!

In this case, lightning is a metaphor for the gay.
shareJust saw the movie and it seemed to me that he was in fact struck by lightning. But if you read wikipedia, they say something else: (Near the end of the movie, the character says that he forgot to write one story (his own) and he rushes to the computer to write it, and then when he leaves the school he gets struck by lightning) in the synopsis they said that the end implies that the story he wrote is the one told in the movie, which means that it never actually happened, that he was never struck by lightning and that was just fiction.
Wikipedia: "In the end scene, Carson is shown walking out of the school into his car; the same scene where he is struck by lighting. However, this time, he does not get struck by lightning, implying that the last story he wrote was the one told in the movie."
