what was the start all about

Who was the guy staggering down the road, who got out of their truck and shot him, how and why did this fit in with the rest of this film

reply

I was confused too. I was expecting the guy on the bridge at the beginning would be one of the guys in the film. Hopefully the psycho lol. But it just seemed to be a random killing that had no purpose to the film. Or did I miss something too?

reply

I believe that the guy victim on the bridge was one of the other people that the crazy family took over the identity and then killed.

That makes sense but there was no mention of it in the film. Weird lol.

It was the "fat Polak" that the psycho kept talking about.

You are supposed to form the idea that this "family" has been stealing identities for some time now - in reality, THEY are the ones who were living in a car and were trying to "steal" the identity of the Salkowski family (the Polish people that everyone was referring to periodically in the film). When our crazy family finds out that the Salkowskis didn't have the right family dynamic, they killed them. That is always their end goal to kill anyway, but they didn't wait with them. That is why you see who we assume is the father being killed on the road in his undies in the beginning of the film.

That is also why they kill Mark's brother. He is not part of the "family" dynamic they've created for himself. Loose end.

I found it irritating and disturbing how Rachel Miner's character constantly mimics Mary's (Selma Blair) every move to try to "become" her. What a nutbag.

reply

I thought the Miner character mimicing Blair was brilliant. Psychopaths have to learn how to behave to appear normal.

My thoughts are why do they keep having to do this? I get they can eventually be caught so they keep having to change families. But they looks so normal (at first) so why not just get freaking jobs? There would be no movie but still.

I admit that I think that about A LOT of people though! hehe They must just be obsessed with the idea of continually living in other people's lives. Almost like they want to kill off the people, have a snag after awhile so they can start over in a new life. Maybe they cannot stand doing the same thing for more than a short time. The kid was the most whack if you ask me! They do have a normal look about them, so if they could keep it together (maybe with meds!!!), they could actually be the all-American family. Yes, it would have meant the movie would have become a sappy family story and would have ended after 14 minutes. hehhehe

Every thinking person would form that idea pretty quickly. The opening shot of the guy running from the car does nothing to add to this IMO.

Stupid film.....started really good but went downhill fast.
