Okay, i watched the movie and the sequel (both suck) and still i don't get it, why were they even put in the maze?

Because they are producing a chemical in their brain/body caused by life threatening situations to extract from them is what I gathered from the movie. I could be wrong, but that's what I thought

Only to have a movie story.

Its the most absurd and stupid story line of all time.
Instead of just rebuilding New York, we will use all the energy and supply to make a stupid maze, when we can test for intel/skill a much simpler/cheaper/quicker way.
