Kiev?

I may have missed some critical moment when this was fully explained but, what exactly happened in Kiev?

reply

I don't think you missed anything. They only ever hinted at what happened at Kiev.

They handled it cleverly, because I was thinking in the beginning that perhaps the toll of killing people was really getting to Jay and that's why he needed to take time off.

But Jay's actions in the later parts of the movie then made me start to think that he might have gone off the deep end and done something psychotic, or something that endangered them in Kiev.

Intentionally left ambiguous, as so many effective movies are.

One of them says 'At least we're not killing a toddler' which might hint to something that happened in Kiev (I heard it in the movie [which I saw for the first time yesterday and will watch again tonight], and also found the quote somewhere online by a critic who thinks along the same line.)

I am also thinking, what happend in Kiev is the key and the reason for Jay being chosen by the cult. I think there are some remarks by the client that hint towards that. And the cult (unlike us) know what happened there.

Perhaps after tonight's watching I can say more...
I am German, and the dialogue is fast and full of information and even with subtitles I missed a lot.

They didn't need to explain the specifics of Kiev except for it being a "heart of darkness" moment where the most evil stuff they'd ever seen happened
