Films with an atmosphere like Kill List?

Now I finally watched this last night (having missed it at the cinema last year) and I have to say, the dark, dingy atmosphere is unbelievable! Probably one of the most unsettling films i've watched, and I loved it.
Im a big fan of the music in this as well, I think it worked perfectly in building such a huge sense of dread, and the violence was brutal but necessary.

Anyhow, can anyone reccomend me any other films, old or new, that carry such a dark atmosphere throughout?
I really liked other pictures such as Antichrist and Se7en, and am a big fan of surreal, dreamlike films and fairly brutal violence. So any reccomendations would be great.

Irreversible and Snowtown spring to mind.

But do yourself a favour and DON'T READ ABOUT SNOWTOWN before you see it!

I was recommended it but knew nothing about it at all till I watched it. That's how films work best IMO, and certainly in the case of Snowtown.

How about Michael Mann's THE KEEP which is easy to track down on youtube . Dark , brooding expressionist atmosphere and confused storytelling

reply

I watched 'Snowtown' recently--really f-cked up movie--and most definitely fits into the same category as 'Kill List.'

This.

Snowtown/The Snowtown Murders was one of the most unsettling viewing experiences I've had, despite the fact that there's very little 'explicit' violence' in it. It's precisely the sustained mood/atmosphere that does it, IMO. It's the kind of film where you remember how it made you feel more than anything else.

I went into it totally cold, too, and wholeheartedly ditto your suggestion :)

And I second the Irreversible mention, too.

The Abandoned http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475937/?ref_=fn_al_tt_5

One of the most atmospheric and sense of dread movies I've seen in the past 10 years.

reply

Oh indeed! You are so right

Try "Possession (1981)". This film really reminded me of it.

Tony 2009. I promise you, you'll love it. Dark, Dingy, extremely unsettling and feels ultra realistic.

reply

Just watched Tony on your recommendation. Sort of a boring movie really. There is no plot really. It is only mildly unsettling, but is wholly creepy and crappy. Not saying it's a bad movie, but it's just not good either.

Oh Lord, grant me chastity, but not yet

I promise you, you'll love it.

How could you possibly make this promise to an anonymous person on the net? lol

reply

Check these two fairly recent horror flicks I watched on Netflix instant:

The Pact and Lovely Molly.

Enjoy the dread!

Serbian Film, it is almost a carbon copy of this film, in both, a guy needs money for his family, both take jobs that are supposed to bring them alot of money, both are doing it for their families, both can not get out of what they are doing before they continue to sink deeper into the rabbit hole, the mood, the feeling of dispair, both use a different kind of sound, serbian film with its techno like beat and kill list with its weird background music, though serbian film is much darker and much more difficult watch , i felt like at the end of kill list it was very similar to serbian film in story and the way things kinda end

reply

Anyone who has seen it can see the references in the last 20min to the 1975 Peter Fonda/Warren Oates devil cult thriller "Race With the Devil" Director must have been inspired by it because scenes of two hitmen observing cult at distance are identical in the older film. Both good uses of such eerines.

Funny Games, either the original or the remake.

A Serbian Film :D

reply

Is almost the same movie in tone and story except - Serbian film is more disturbing but more simple. I liked both.

reply

Especially the new born baby rape...great cinema there....a Serbian film was dog excrement...this and Serbian film get a 4/10 each
