what's the director's relation to the participants?

It seemed like the director wasn't involved at all in the hunt, but yet he had some really old footage of Justin and seemed like the documentary had been filmed over a long period of time, so just wondering how the director knows/met/got involved with Justin and the other participants, how the movie was conceived, and why there was a lot of focus on Justin 's personal history.
