Lack of female reporters

One thing that really struck me with 'Inside the New York Times' was the number of male employees compared to females at the Times. Great to see at the end the editor is now a woman!!

Indeed. It's quite the opposite at the paper I write for in Indiana. Granted, we're nowhere near the size of the NYT, but we are pretty rural, which to me would suggest a stereotype of mostly male employees. The sports editor, a photographer and I are the only dudes in the editorial department. There's another guy in circulation and another in advertising, but he floats between our paper and others. The upper management - the publisher, GM and managing editor - are all ladies.

We're all white though, much like the staff at the Times.

Lack of females, lack of diversity, and in 2014 the female editor you referred to is no longer the editor.

What does it mean to you? I am African-American does my race help a paper by the mere presence? Does a woman by being female help the news? I am beginning to doubt that diversity itself advances much. I am more concerned with the politics of the person, which maybe even worse once that begins to factor in. But please help me to understand how my life or the lives of readers is enriched when a male dominated institution hires women.

So far I have seen women act with the same degree of indifference toward me that men do. Men can strong arm another man, yet women can call men to do the strong arming they need done to persons of color. So again I ask, what difference does it make?
