The single best documentary of Sundance 2011

Congratulations to Marshall Curry on the most engrossing eco-documentary since Grizzly Man. There's nothing not to like about this film.

During the Q & A session afterwards, I asked Curry if he plans on interviewing Daniel McGovern again, once he's out of prison. Curry told me he hopes to do so, and then include it on a future DVD release.

Glad to see the film has already been picked up by PBS and the BBC. It ought to be release nationwide in theaters.

The glorification of a bunch of froth-mouthed, anti-science, anti-civilization terrorists who think that because they live in a sollipistic fantasyworld their actions don't qualify as violence sounds pretty detestable to me.

Have you seen the film?

reply

Actually the movie is very fair in it's portrayal of anarchists vs. authorities. And if you watch the movie and really listen to what they say without prejudging them, you'll learn that they don't think what they did was not violent. They did what they felt they had to do to succeed... and they were conflicted and struggled with those decisions the every step of the way. Just because you don't agree with their choices doesn't make them bad people. They never physically hurt anyone. Maybe you should focus your anger on people who really do... like murderers and rapists.

reply

Yeah and eco-terrorists.

reply

As someone that definitely thinks they belong in jail, I can say it is a very fair film. You should definitely see it. Sure they are terrorist, but it is interesting to see how they end up going in that direction and how they feel about it now in addition to talking to the people that tracked them down and some of the victims of their acts. It is a really well made film.

reply

Watching it now on PBS. I'm really liberal but these people are a-holes.

They did manage to shut down that horse-slaughtering factory. Good for them.

reply

Terrorist methods justify nothing. Imagine if the tea party or whatever shut down abortion clinics that way, would you really say "Good for them?"

reply

No because I'm anti-abortion. I would fight the tea party fascists to the last man. I think most people agree that the horse slaughtering factory was disgusting anyway. It's not as two-sided as the abortion issue. I still think ELF did some good in shutting it down.

What did you watch? It was pretty clear that they knew their actions were violent and dangerous. Their justification was that it was the only means to an end.

Btw, hasn't anybody told you verbosity is embarrassing? Try less.
