Well worth a watch...

Watching The Forgiveness of Blood was one of those rare experiences of seeing a film I knew nothing about, and being pleasantly surprised by what I saw. Having been thoroughly underwhelmed by the director’s previous effort – Maria Full Of Grace – I had low expectations. Yet, Forgiveness of Blood managed to be interesting, thrilling and is more than worth the effort of seeking out.

Following the technicalities of an Albanian blood feud, it does what world cinema does best in exploring a different, and unknown, cultural tradition and making it completely understandable and relateable to an ignorant audience (such as myself) in a way which is both enjoyable and engrossing.

Aside from this it manages to be a well balanced coming of age story, and also attempt to grapple with the age old question of whether/how the sins of past generations can/should be passed on to the new.

Yet in doing this it is never ham fisted in its manner, and at all points the story seems natural, and easy to comprehend.

The acting is also impressive, with the young main cast carrying most of the work.

In simple terms The Forgiveness of Blood is one of the best movies I have watched this year, and I would strongly recommend it to others. Try and get it if you can!
