Sniper Rifle episode

Was it Just me, or was this "contest" stupid? both RJF and Vince had completely different weapon systems. would it not have made sense if they were using the same caliber bullet? i mean this was the same as having a hummer go up against a ferrari. they are both capable at doing certain things well and others not so much. I would think that a police dept would want a certain caliber for its sniper rifles.

reply

My biggest problem was they were over complicating the rifle, at least RJF was. A folding stock that can't fold against the side of the rifle because the bolt is there, so it folds at an angle? If you are trying to sneak in somewhere, having that sticking up while you are carrying it is a liability. Also, there was a iPod/iPhone attached to the thing.

reply

agreed. vince's design was much more simplistic, while rjf looked like an OCC bike lol.

reply

it looks like something you would buy in the toy section at toys r us

reply

LoL wasn't an Ipod, it was a balistic computer, could be an Iphone, a few companies do software for Iphones and androids, also the stock wasn't actually theirs, it was an of the shelf stock.

reply

So if it was an iphone, it could have been an ipod as well. They run the same OS.

There are other similarities between OCC and SOG. For example, Vince "leaving" RJF and then creating a rival bike, err.... Gun shop. The former popularity of the 'verses' dynamic showed that under the right circumstances that can work, and work well, provided that the parties involved cooperate. And if, the producers can pull it off. Which in this case, they don't seem to know what to do, as they throw in staged, out of context, scenes to milk what they can from the situation.

The RJF gun was too heavy, the "folding stock" was clumsy. And since when has a sniper ever needed a folding stock? Vince's gun was light and simple -- "keep it simple". The bolt lever was unnecessarily long, IMHO.

The cops chose RJF's gun because it looked sexy.

And ...
the whole "shooting through two car windows" thing was absurd. Shooting through glass at an angle will deflect the bullet. Shooting through TWO windows will deflect the bullet even more.

I'm thoroughly convinced that sniper's shot with the RJF gun was pure luck.

i have a rem 700 with a similar extended bolt handle. it is so convenient when cycling rounds while laying down. you can easily keep the target in sight and cycle the round with the only joint moving is your wrist- the elbow needn't move. makes reengaging a missed target much quicker and easier.

the -half folding stock- was idiotically absurd.

Did anyone else notice that in the middle of the episode, Will and Joe are fiddling with the bolt action, saying it needs to be smoother, but the stock was completely different?

reply

The thing that really bothered me when RJF was getting their rifle tested, when they shot through the windows at the box, i could swear they had to use more then one shot, because one of the windows (i think the front most window) wasn't shattered. And given how fast bullets are i would think they would have filmed and showed the bullet going through both windows and hitting its target for max "wow" or whatever.

reply

I was just rewatching this very episode, and something occured to me. It's obvious that RJF spent a considerable amount of time trying to field repair their weapon because they didn't have it working when they got there. I'm no police officer, but when choosing a sniper, I'd like to think it's take into consideration which one took forever to get ready and had alot of problems on the range.

reply

i still think that it was an apples to oranges comparison.

they had different weapon systems because the sheriff didn't specify a size cartridge (only what they currently use and like). the two companies came in with different weapons systems they felt would best suit the sheriff's dept. not at all an uncommon practice. it would be another story if they specified a cartridge size, but even then, there are many different firearms that fire the same cartridge.

I thought it was odd that they talked about how important it was that there wasn't over penetration. Then they set up two tests one that rewarded you for doing what they talked about at length, and one that rewarded you for doing exactly the opposite.

The editing was pretty odd for the second test as well. They have a shot of the target through the car from the "sniper's perch" then it just kinda cuts away loud band and the target blows up. They don't show the bullet hitting the glass, they don't show the broken out windows after the fact. Vince's Gun they show the glass which doesn't seem to be the standard tempered glass used in most side car windows but rather the laminated glass used primarily in windshields. Those side windows should have shattered in tiny little cubes. Its very odd that they specifically show one gun's shot hitting glass and not the other gun's shot pretty much at all. which makes me think that all things may not have been equal.

Basically RJF made a gun that fires higher speed projectiles through any inanimate objects/bystanders that get in the way, with a folding stock that doesn't really fold, and is more cumbersome than the gun it is designed to replace. While Vince made a multipurpose rifle that per the stated criteria won't be a hazard to everyone within a square mile of the shooter and is lighter and more compact than the gun it's replacing.

OF course all these outcomes were predetermined anyway. I think the producers are trying their hardest to paint Will as the troubled protagonist struggling to keep it together in the face of hardships. But will is just flat out unlikeable. He's serial killer creepy with all his weird grinning and silly backwoods patois (if he ever does get to "Ice skate with the Devil" it'll probably be a self-inflicted shot that gets him there).

that makes sense to me. i guess i was surprised by how different they were and how there was not more similarity.

I call BS on that episode let alone this entire travesty of what a gun shop should be. I love to see them working in the "shop" espically the early episodes with nary a pice of machinery in sight, all hand tools, oh brother! Chris(yas suh)His daughter (no need to comment). Think goodness fior Vince and Phlem, the nearest thing to normalcy that this show displays.
Some dummy that was going to market an antique Russian machine gun to the U.S. Military? wouldn't the SAW249 fill that role?
My God all of the talk about financel hardships, I'm sorry isn't Discovery pitching in?
Will was delivering a sniper to the Sheriff without an extractor?
The mysterious SOCOM project, if these rifles are so jiffy why couldn't they be sold piecemeal from RJF? And Vince had the only barrels in existance?
I know, if I think it's so horrible why watch it? It's kind of like watching the Talladega 500. You know there will be a pile up at some point.
It is horribly un realistic, but very cheap entertainment! Watch and laugh.
P.S. Would someone buy Joe a beard trimmer!
