What about women profiting from this misrepresentation?

Plenty of models, strippers, prostitutes, news anchors, etc all play into the sex sells game and make millions. So it can't be blamed all on men.

Ever heard of a book called Female Chauvinist Pigs?

Just because they make money off of it doesn't mean they enjoy doing it. Ever considered that they see that turning themselves into sex objects is (by far) the easiest way to make money fast?

Did you even watch the film btw? The media tells women that their worth is their sexuality. Do you think it's weird that women believe that? That they try to capitalize on the one asset that they think they have?

I don't agree with this practice, because I think they are playing the game and continuing the status quo, but I can't say it's not understandable.

Oh please. Plenty of women wouldn't want the money trough to stop. Since plenty of them have no real skills.Did someone put a gun to Jane Fonda's head to drop out of college and became a model? The feminist idea that all women are victims and need to be saved is ridiculous.Lets not act like Britney Spears would be a chemist if it wasn't for the media demoralizing women. This documentary seems to be made up of women that don't have the looks to be on TV. Or women that have used their looks in the past to be on TV but now are aging and want to express their anger.

I agree the media treats women and even men like crap because they want to make money. When have companies ever treated anyone with respect over profit? Women are the most influential when it comes to buying products so why haven't they challenged the way the media shows them by hitting them where it counts?Men aren't buying all the makeup, luxury clothes, etc for themselves. The truth is neither men or women are rushing to see ugly people in commercials, movies,TV shows, etc. Maybe a few sprinkled within a cast that brings the comedy.Instead of making documentaries.Do you know how fast companies will change if women said they weren't buying products that had super thin models advertising the service/product?Companies only listen to money. I don't think companies use attractive people to hawk products because they hate average people. Companies use what works and attractive people bring in more sales. In every industry that is true whether its male or female.

It is interesting how some women profit from this exploitative model and it's something I've always found fascinating. I suppose the difference is that they are still portrayed differently compared to the men, even the dumb men who are in entertainment and who wouldn't be chemists otherwise. I guess if you see what is profitable you will go for it, plus a lot of the time you have a choice between sexualising yourself and giving up your job, if you legitimately want to do acting or singing or newscasting or whatever. But it doesn't matter - women who are trying for other careers (e.g. politics) are horribly torn down and even comes back to their appearance anyway, when it shouldn't. Anyway, it's not to do with "blaming men", it's more to do with why this happens and how we can improve things. It's for everyone's benefit.

It's also got nothing to do with good-looking people. Obviously companies will use good-looking people in ads, men and women. The difference is in the portrayal of the women. Did you see the ad in the movie, I think it was for chips, where the man had the packet of chips and suddenly the clothes blew off a woman in the street? And she was standing there in fancy lingerie trying to cover herself up - she wasn't even happy to be in her underwear, she was ashamed and this was meant to be funny and make people want to buy chips? Nothing to do with being good-looking, she was just some sort of object, the man was not naked and he was portrayed as powerful and consuming the product. That's the difference.

I guess you're proving the point when you say things like "women who don't have the looks to be on tv or women who are ageing". Most of the women spoken to are or were in the public eye, so they have been on tv plenty, it's not like they're jealous. Others are still on tv and not particularly attractive (imho), like Rachel Maddow. Then there are traditional sex symbol ones like Rosario Dawson and did you see the woman who made this film? She's not exactly unattractive.

Sigh...atheists are usually sensible about these things, come on

Also, I find it slightly disturbing that this is what you have taken away from the film.
So you care more about men being 'blamed' (in your opinion, and probably blamed unfairly) than about the consequences for women?

........

Men are not blamed particurlarly. Everyone who doesn't stand up but just goes along with this, is in a way to blame.
And it just so happens to be that men are mostly not very receptive to hearing these stories and making a change. Because it doesn't affect them directly or because they don't care, for they enjoy their current position, or because they are too busy being defensive to actually contribute to solving this problem.

If men were to be more open and willing to be helpful, they wouldn't have to be the ones to blame. (as in fact the movie shows, not all men are.)

Strippers & prostitution was around long before mass media. You can't blame everything on the media.

reply

Film doesn't mention those two professions. But it does cite children with body image issues that can escalate to mental illness, addiction or disorders. And I doubt that was around long before media.

reply

I don't like how they make it sound like the mass media created this. How about pre-civilization where women from other tribes were captured, just to make babies with them? I mean we have given women everything we thought they wanted, sexually liberated and everything and now they complain about it? I'm starting to believe more and more that women doesn't actually want to be liberated. They want to be controlled. And feminism is their way of whining and teasing men to test our boundaries. Women test mens boundaries by teasing them, to see if the man got balls enough to resist. And men today collectively show women that we don't have any balls no more so they are just bitter :/

reply

What you said makes zero sense. First of all, men didn't "give" women anything. Women throughout history have had to fight for every single freedom that men have denied them. Women being granted what most people today would consider basic human rights was not something that occurred out of the goodness of men's hearts. Second of all, I don't know one woman alive who says they are a feminist because they secretly want men to control them. And third, when a woman tries to fight for social justice and equality, she does not to do it to "tease you" or "test your boundaries". She does it because there are still men (if you can even call yourself that) like you out there who have this kind of thinking.
