it wasn't him shapeshifting during battle. He has the ability to convert to a speed form where he can run on all fours and his body somewhat streches, face included.

You're right, they didn't imply he could change his size. But this was only the first episode. They're leaving some things a mystery, to slowly be revealed.

I forget the exact words, but Mom did start to say the physicals of their intimate union wasn't as perplexing as you would think . . . which leaves me to believe it was . . . ummm . . . more straight-forward. Of course, by then the main character was scarred with a pretty bad mental image.
