So long Persie!

You won't be missed !

Hate to be insensitive but she has done nothing but wreak destruction wherever she went and she showed no remorse.
Even when when she tried to apologize to Agnes, Hallam knew she was insincere.

Don't understand why Hallam was shown
sobbing after learning of Persie's suicide, unless it was at the collapse of his household in general: Agnes learning of his affair with Persie, Persie shooting Beryl (I think she was really wanting to just shoot someone, like a spoiled child; she would have shot Spargo), Spargo and Beryl's plans gone to hell, and Pritchard gone off the wagon.

And of course Hallam's reputation and position within the Foreign Office.

Yes, that position as equerry for the Duke of Kent sounds like a cover for being the Duke's plaything.

Interesting point about Spargo showing decency by returning the blackmail money - agree about that. Great scene showing Hallam squirming when Spargo handed him that envelope - he immediately became alarmed, like, WHAT NEXT?

Too bad this series has been canceled - would have been interesting to see if Spargo and Beryl would have gotten married before he got called up.

And that last scene with Blanche and Agnes dressed in their uniforms, ready to put out fires and drive ambulances - now THAT is something I'd like to see!

This is where fanfic comes in, lol!

Yeah? Well if the Duke ACTUALLY looked like Blake Ritson, I'd take that job in a London minute. *drool*

Actually I was wondering about the sobbing as well. Did he actually live Persie? Does he love his wife? Idk I need to find the episodes online somewhere because I didn't see them all together when they were on.

All Season 2 episodes can be viewed on PBS through December 11 at:

I think Hallam was sobbing because he was both relieved and horrified that Persie was dead.

Yes, Hallam loved his wife. There's a conversation he has with the Duke of Kent where he says that he fears he's no longer necessary to Agnes and that if she doesn't need him anymore, he will be "quite lost." At the end of the last episode, he tells Agnes that he will do anything, be anything she wants.

Hallam needed to be needed, and Persie was a needy woman. And so he let her wreak havoc both Upstairs and Downstairs.

Persie was horrible but I couldn't hate her. She obviously had a lot of psychological problems that needed to be addressed.

I think Hallam got involved with her because he just felt sorry for her. He is someone who likes to be in charge and solve other people's problems. In this season, Agnes has stopped being interested in social climbing and essentially fell in love with another man. I thought it was understandable and logical that he consoled himself with Persie.

I was looking forward to another season to see if Hallam can save his marriage or if he will lose Agnes to Casper Landry. We'll never know now.

That may be but he was attracted and then some. You don't take risks like that with a volatile personality like Persie because you feel sorry for her.

I missed this episode. I couldn't find anything on the PBS site about when it will be shown again. Does anyone know?

After Persie plummets to the floor is that the last we see of her? No mortuary? Who found her?

We saw her body on the floor, w/blood flowing out from her ear, (a la Matthew Crawley in this year's Downton finale). So we know that she died instantly once her head hit the floor. We then saw her body being carried out from the house by the ambulance.

It wasn't made clear who found her, but I think everyone in the house knew she jumped out from the balcony and died, as when Spargo asked Agnes on whether she should've helped Persie instead of helping the wounded Beryl, she replied "I cannot do anything to help Persie, but I can help Beryl."

" . . . as when Spargo asked Agnes on whether she should've helped Persie instead of helping the wounded Beryl, she replied "I cannot do anything to help Persie, but I can help Beryl"

Um I just watched this minutes ago and I could swear there was no scene like that. Did they cut scenes for America?

Edit: i take the above back. Just saw it again because, as you know they play it a million times in a week. Agnes and Spargo have this exchange as they are bent over Beryl trying to stop her blood flow. It's said in a more off hand way and quickly.

Yes, yes, poor Persie's psyche. She was a selfish bitch and learned nothing from life or the destruction she caused. Agnes started similarly but her character at least started to grow outside herself.

Won't be shown again, I'm afraid. You'll have to buy the DVDs or watch on Amazon Prime or Netflix.

Josiahfly-beryl did get married. The reception happened in the house with just staff (she had an arm sling and dances with her husband)
