I liked it but popular opinion did not

I thought this was better than DOWNTON ABBEY but the press slagged it off from day one, with endless praise for DOWNTON ABBEY at the same time, mix in the anti BBC bias of most papers and it was an uphill battle.
A wartime set series could have shown the way the war made Britain a fairer place (which is why Mrs Thatcher decided not to take part?)and how most of the upper classes did great work during the war.

reply

You were in the clear minority. Downton has won many awards.

reply

Yes,people think TITANIC is a great film and talentless bands sell millions of records, people think the Harry Potter books are suitable for adults to read and people are lining up to see THE HUNGER GAMES.
DOWNTOWN ABBEY is popular but as somebody else said around here it is just a period soap opera.
While the new UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS was not as good as the original it was a poor drama not a good soap opera.

reply

I'm afraid that you're not making your case very well at all, ib.

reply

Maybe not but I hate DOWNTON ABBEY,reminds me of the government.

reply

I love Downton Abbey and can't wait to see the next series. Could not watch past Ep 1 of Upstairs Downstairs, it reminded me of the government! All that political stuff was BORING!

reply

sorry luv, you don't obviously know what that means. Your comparison is like saying if the sun shines there is going to be a car crash. One doesn't begot another.

Downton has CRITICAL acclaim worldwide, and that's a fact, no matter how much you don't want it to.

reply

I agree with you. UD was much better than Downton Abbey and I really can't understand the negativity towards this series. The political aspect gave UD a broader perspective and made DA look shallow and soap operish in comparison.

These are the official viewing figures over the course of two series.

BARB officials:

S1
8.85m
8.18m
8.13m

S2
7.87m
6.70m
5.86m
5.56m
5.51m
5.22m

U/D lost 40% of its viewers over the course of two series hence why its been dropped.

Its that man again!!

do you even know what program the series was based?

reply

I don't agree it was better than Downton--IMO, both served their own purposes--but I'm still finding it difficult to see how the show could have continued in WW2. Johnny and Spargo were called up, Agnes and Blanche enlisted in women's forces (I forget which ones), Persie is dead, the Holland children were in the country, Rose is still in her nursing home, and Agnes and Hallam split up for good (though not outwardly). The premise is "Upstairs Downstairs", which focused on the house at 165 Eaton Place. If a good portion of the main characters are not even living in the house, the basis on which the show rests is gone. I like the send-off they gave (almost as though they knew from the beginning that S2 would be their last), and let's chalk the relative failure of this show up to bad buzz, because no matter how popular Downton was, if there was strong, widespread, and consistent positive buzz, the ratings for UD wouldn't have dropped.

I came accross Upstairs, Downstairs the other day in HMV, had heard of the original series but hadn't watched either, £20 for the boxset (series 1 & 2) seemed a little dear when i wasn't sure i was going to like it so i just bought series 1. I'm a big fan of anything in the 1930s so it sounded like i might like it.
I took a break from essay writing to watch episode one and watched all 3 episodes straight through, loved it so much that i bought series 2 the next day, just finished watching the last episode. Deeply disappointed that it won't be returning for another series as it would have been interesting to see how 165 would get through ww2

I own Downton Abbey (bought it yesterday as local hmv didn't have any of the original Upstairs, Downstairs series) but haven't watched it yet, but i understand the era of that mirrors the original UD so unless they take Downton all the way through to the 1930s i don't see how its comparable in that sense

reply

Dirty-dancing-forever, I highly recommend the original 1971 series - I don't know if you are aware but ITV3 re-run it on a loop on Saturday mornings, at the moment they are up to the beginning of series 2.

reply

Lol! What is the nonsense rambling about Titanic, and Harry Potter for adults, and Hunger Games? Haha! This post is absurd.
Just say you don't like it.

Moving along.
